Time Warner Cable Launches iPad App

Time Warner iPad app

Time Warner has launched its TWCable TV app for the iPad and, as CNET reports, in addition to the online channel guide we now expect from cable company apps, it allows subscribers to stream the live cable feed directly to the iPad. The free app requires iOS 4.2 or higher and is currently available only for the iPad.

In order to stream, app users must have both Time Warner cable and internet and because this is a Wi-Fi only service, it only works inside the subscriber’s home. Time Warner expects to expand the streaming to outside the house (still using Wi-Fi) through later updates.

The app has an online channel guide that allows users to see what shows are currently playing and what is on next. The user can stream shows in high definition from 32 channels including A&E, Syfy, USA, and Bravo, by tapping on the show name. See the picture above for the current channel line-up. More channels are expected to be added a later date.

Time Warner Cable President Rob Marcus said in a statement,

“We are tremendously excited about this app, which is the first of many that will allow our customers to harness the power of their tablet-type devices. Helping our customers see the content they’re paying for on multiple devices makes their Time Warner Cable subscription even more valuable, and they can expect much more from us in this space very soon.”

Other updates to the app should include the ability to use the iPad as a remote control and DVR functionality. No timeline has been set as to when those enhancements might arrive.
