THE SIMPSONS “A Midsummer’s Nice Dream” Season 22 Episode 16 – Cheech and Chong are returning to Springfield. If you don’t know who Cheech and Chong are, you’re one of many. They are Springfield’s equivalent of Beavis and Butthead. But when Chong decides not to sell out by doing the same skits over and over again, Homer steps up to the stoner comedy plate and takes Chong’s place.

Now it is Cheech and Homer, and Marge allows Homer to head out on the comedy tour. Between comedy auditions with Skinner (his celery phone “riff” was quite…em…interesting) and Willie’s skit and the real comedy road trip without the comedy, Homer’s strand of this episode was as unfunny as it was spoofed to be. Luckily, it was balanced out by Marge and Lisa’s very funny cat lady meets hoarders storyline.

Thankfully cat lady showed up. I love cat lady. Cat lady is a hoarder and Lisa and Marge decide to help her “like a reality show without the cameras.” Lisa: “You mean, just reality?”

All in all, it was a pretty flat episode of the Simpsons. The title made no sense whatsoever until Bart’s tacked on soliloquy.

Some of the best moments in the episode:

Of course having the cat lady watch Cats singing Memory was possibly the greatest moment in the episode.

Marge, looking at the cat lady’s throwaways: “All of JD Salinger’s books except The Catcher In The Rye! …A hot lather dispenser!”

Great throwback to Toy Story 3‘s Lots-O in Marge’s hoard.

The Simpsons have always been the first on the scene where self deprecation comes into play and this episode was no exception, such as when Cheech and Chong are criticized for falling back on their old skits, Bart falls back on his old catchphrase: “Ay carumba!”
