Anjelica Huston Joins NBC Pilot SMASH

Anjelica Huston has been cast in NBC’s musical pilot SMASH. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project focuses on a group of people who come together to put on a Broadway show about Marilyn Monroe. EW.com further details that Smash will follow the creation of the musical from conception to opening night.

Huston will play Eileen, “a shrewd, dry, smart, cynical New York City theater producer.” She joins the show’s leads Debra Messing (Will & Grace) as a lyricist and Christian Borle (Broadway musical Legally Blonde) as a composer, along with Megan Hilty (Broadway musical Wicked), Katharine McPhee (American Idol), Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean), and Raza Jaffrey (MI-5).

Based on an idea by Steven Spielberg, Smash is Huston’s first foray as a series regular on television. Theresa Rebeck (Canterbury’s Law, NYPD Blue) will write the pilot; and Michael Mayer will direct. Spielberg will serve as executive producer, with Justin Falvey, Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
