Deadline.com reports that Kevin Spacey is set to star in and executive produce HOUSE OF CARDS, a drama series project from David Fincher. Created for indie producer Media Rights Capital, the project has not yet been taken out to TV networks.

The pilot is based on the political-thriller novel by Michael Dobbs (former Chief of Staff of British Conservative Party), as well as on the British TV miniseries adaptation of the book, both of which are also called House of Cards. The novel is set at the end of Margaret Thatcher’s tenure as prime minister and follows a fictional Conservative politician, who is an antihero character that manipulates his way to become leader of the governing party and Prime Minister. The 1990 BBC drama serial, starring Ian Richardson, was critically and popularly acclaimed. Fincher’s adaptation will be set in the U.S.

This project will be Fincher’s TV directorial debut, and marks the reunion of Fincher and Spacey, who were director and executive producer of The Social Network, respectively. Fincher will direct the pilot and executive produce with Eric Roth (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Joshua Donen, Spacey, and Spacey’s producing partner Dana Brunetti from Trigger Street Productions. The drama pilot will be written by playwright/screenwriter Beau Willimon (The Ides of March).
