SURVIVOR: REDEMPTION ISLAND (2011) “Keep Hope Alive” Review

Survivor: Redemption Island “Keep Hope Alive”, Season 22 Episode 3 – I really feel like “Keep Hope Alive” was the first episode of Survivor: Redemption Island in a lot of ways. We got to see the first duel, the first couple at Redemption Island, and the awesome Redemption Island Arena! I was definitely excited to see where they would edit in the two new scenes involving Redemption Island. Instead of the usual “Returning from tribal” scene that we see before the theme song, we now see the two Redemption Island members meeting each other. I’m fine with this replacement since the return from tribal is usually kind of a downer, and I’m all for changing it. Those scenes are always the same. “Man guys, that was a crazy tribal”, blah blah blah.

We also get to see our first duel! I’ve always been a huge fan of the games that the Survivor team comes up with, so I’m all for sacrificing a little “Camp time” in favor of some suspenseful duels! Some people might not like this change, as all of the “scheming” scenes are the best part of Survivor for lots of people. I am not one of those people. Don’t get me wrong, I love the strategizing as much as the next Survivor fan, but it can seem like they’re just dragging their feet at times. We get it. Nobody trusts each other, they want so-and-so out, etc. They could edit all of this drama into the 5 minutes before tribal.

Man, do I hate it when teams throw challenges. Thankfully it barely ever happens anymore, and it hasn’t happened on the show in several years. What I can’t understand though is that it seems like the cons far outweigh the pros. The cons are the following: You don’t win the reward and deprive your future tribe of those prizes, it shorts your tribe for the merge, it’s terrible sportsmanship and if it ever comes out down the road that you threw a challenge then the jury won’t vote for you, and it makes you look like a huge jerk on national television when you deny it! Good luck getting voted as the Sprint player of the season after being a huge skeezball.

Russell had just started living up to his name again tonight, but unfortunately it was too little too late. While Boston Rob started playing a more savvy game on Ometepe by actively seeking out the idol, Russell was back at his good old scheming ways again! I was so excited for him to pull off the incredible blindside, but it was not meant to be. It’s funny that I almost expected him to make this incredible hail mary play at the end of the game, and expected it to work. It really shouldn’t be surprising that he went home, when his alliance was despised and outnumbered 6 to 3, but it’s Russell! You would just assume he would pull something out of his hat and stick around another week. Alas, here’s hoping he sticks around on Redemption Island for the next few weeks and gets put back in the game. I’ve seen him do crazier things, so I’m not counting him out just yet!

Random Thoughts:

– I wish Jeff could penalize tribe members for throwing challenges. It makes them so boring to watch!

– Did Russell even end up building a fake idol?

– I bet Russell’s armpit pustules can speak more clearly than Ralph. Spell better, too. (Ressell?)
