MODERN FAMILY “Two Monkeys and a Panda” Review

MODERN FAMILY (ABC) "Two Monkeys and a Panda"

MODERN FAMILY “Two Monkeys and a Panda” Season 2 Episode 17 – Jay and Gloria bicker over their final resting place, Claire tries to keep her daughters from killing each other, and Cam is distraught over Lily’s last name in the “Two Monkeys and a Panda” episode of MODERN FAMILY. Meanwhile, Phil spends the day at the spa being pampered and schooled in relationships. Yeah, that sounds about right.

I’ve never thought much about mausoleums, but Gloria has a point: that so looked like a giant filing cabinet. Shudder. I’ll take cremation or a green funeral, thanks. Jay breaks my heart with his fear of being the old putz Gloria was married to once upon a time. Thank goodness he has Manny to set him straight. “Please. For the first month I didn’t even bother to learn your name.” There are no words for how much I adore that little dirty old man. That Gloria fell in love with Jay during their first fight melts my heart, too.

I was less than thrilled when I realized this would be another episode with Cam and Mitchell fighting because they have been bickering so much this season, but I just love this storyline. While Mitchell (obviously) shouldn’t have unilaterally given Lily his name, I can see his point. Cam does over-react on a regular basis, and from those hilarious flashbacks, Mitchell’s fear seems almost justified. The storybook is almost too sweet and I love that Lily clapped. Adoption yay! I think that’s the most expressive we’ve seen Lily, too. Oh, and there couldn’t be a better ending to this than “Technically it’s my house, but I’ll fix that, too.”

Poor Claire; so desperate to keep Haley and Alex from fighting that she will drive to five stores to help one daughter lie to the other. Teenage girls are brutal. Phil at the spa is, of course, hilarious. It’s not all fun and games, though. Those are some frosty looks from the women after Phil misunderstands what Claire needs. Modern Family then gets into the public service game by teaching Relationships 101: “She doesn’t want you to solve her problems… She just wants support so she can solve them herself.” Well done, spa ladies, and thanks for listening, Phil.

I love that Phil, who had the easiest day by far, is the only one to end the episode less happy than he started it because Claire didn’t notice his manicure or spa glow. “It’s nothing. I’ll just go start dinner.” Balance is a wonderful thing.

Favorite lines:

“What did Oprah do now?”

“She became a stripper-and not the heart of gold kind. The airport kind.”

“Well, I’ve got to give my cholesterol pill something to do.”

“Kale is a garnish; it’s not ready to anchor a meal.”

“I’ve filled out all the forms since you signed up for a twelve year gym membership.”/”The more you spend, the more you save.”

“Ta da is when you do a flip or the magician cuts the pretty lady in half, not when you show someone where you’re going to shove their dead body.”

“There’s no explanation and there’s no excuse. I just want to know why!”

“I had to undress a mannequin while a creepy guy filmed it, so we have that to look forward to on the internet.”

“Two Monkeys and a Panda” is a sweet, funny, touching episode of Modern Family. Even though Cam and Mitchell are fighting again, there is an interesting root cause this time and I love the resolution. I can never get enough Jay and Manny, and Phil at a spa is bliss. Fun times all around.

What did you think of the episode? Do you have a favorite couple? Mine changes often, but Cam and Mitchell most melted my heart here.
