Katharine McPhee Cast in SMASH

Katharine McPhee

All you McPheever sufferers out there are gonna love this bit of news. Looks like your favorite American Idol star is going to be singing again on your televisions real soon. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Katharine McPhee has been offered a role in the NBC pilot SMASH.

The series is a Steven Spielberg musical drama from DreamWorks TV and Universal Media Studios that revolves around a cross section of characters who come together to mount a Broadway musical inspired by silver screen icon Marilyn Monroe.

The pilot was written by playwright Theresa Rebeck and Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening) is set to direct. Meanwhile, Spielberg, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey are on board as executive producers with Hairspray‘s Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. Tony-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittmanwill will be writing the original songs for the show.

McPhee joins co-stars Debra Messing and Jack Davenport (FlashForward) who were previously cast as the lyricist and choreographer, respectively.

Smash is looking to be quite an ambitious project for broadcast television. Until the hit known as Glee came on the air, the musical wasn’t exactly something with a successful track record. But it looks like now that people have seen it can work, more networks are willing to give the musical another try. Whether or not Smash works as well as Glee, time will tell.
