SYM-BIONIC TITAN “The Demon Within” Review

SYM-BIONIC TITAN “The Demon Within” Episode 13 This week’s episode of Sym-Bionic Titan has Ilana, Lance and Octus exploring a swamp area in search of a Mutradi ship.

In this monster-of-the-week, or should I say, Mutradi-of-the-week episode, the gang encounters a fantastically gross Mutradi prowling the swampland. The minute this Mutradi jumped out and scrambled through the vegetation at super speed, I knew I would totally dig this gruesome villain. His brain is encased in clear skull with eyes at the bottom of his jaw and he’s got a moderate level of intelligence for the hunt making him totally creepy.

Ilana, having been attacked by the Mutradi, gets a really nasty looking venom burn on her leg which begins to turn her into a Mutradi beast herself. Ilana tries to brush it off and the whole time I’m thinking that it’s because she doesn’t want her friends to worry about her or to slow them down. Turns out there’s a much more superficial reason at work in her head. Ilana sees her reflection in the swamp and screams at Lance and Octus, “Don’t look at me! I’m hideous” before bounding off into the swamp to hide shamefully. Maybe it’s because I’m not an alien princess, but if I looked at my reflection and saw I was becoming a reptilian swamp monster, my first thoughts would be in the ballpark of stopping the transformation and figuring out what the heck was going on – concern for my guard and robot seeing me in an incredibly ugly state would be the last thing on my mind.

Even if it’s totally predictable because so many animated action shows have told the same story a hundred different ways (The Clone Wars and Generator Rex actually did it just last week), it’s always fun to have one of the main characters turn temporarily against the protagonists. It makes for interesting battles because obviously the good guys would never intentionally hurt their ally so they usually have to use strategy to solve the problem more than brute force. Obviously with Ilana in alien form, the Sym-Bionic Titan doesn’t make an appearance and Lance and Octus figure that they’ve got to destroy the source of Ilana’s transformation to get her back.

The three have more casual conversation in this episode which makes them seem like they’re all growing closer and more personal with one another. I loved the little nod to Duran Duran when Ilana is describing a diplomatic arrangement with “Prince Simon of Duran” – someone on the writing staff must be a Simon LeBon fan. When Ilana recovers, both Lance and Octus seem relieved, but I’m still not sure if Lance has feelings for Ilana outside of his duty to protect her. At the end of the episode, Ilana mentions that she’d like to go on a date and I wonder if she’s got anyone in mind.

Fun episode overall, but the weekly monster plot can get tired pretty quickly so I’m looking forward to when we get more episodes focused on the main Sym-Bionic Titan storyline.
