BEN 10: ULTIMATE ALIEN “The Transmogrification of Eunice” Review

BEN 10: ULTIMATE ALIEN “The Transmogrification of Eunice” Season 2 Episode 1 – The second season premiere of BEN 10: Ultimate Alien kicked off with Ben, Gwen and Kevin on their way out to a fun night of camping when they stumble upon a mysterious alien pod containing a beautiful amnesiac named Eunice.

Right off the bat, Ben is enamored with the mysterious Eunice and invites her along for their camping trip against what all might consider better judgment. I suppose this means that aside from his unearthly talents, Ben is ultimately a teenaged male at his core. He can’t even wipe the stupid smile off his face while spending time with the new gorgeous girl, which then begs the question, what happened to Julie?

Gwen, addresses the Julie issue with Ben and we’re given insight into some old drama that seems to have put the last nail in the coffin of Ben and Julie’s relationship. The difference between “Julie broke up with me” and “you might as well be broken up” in the world of relationships can be astronomical depending on where you’re standing. Obviously Ben seems to think that this last discussion was enough to end their relationship and Gwen, who might have a better understanding of Julie’s perspective, is arguing that at most, they’re on a break. I can already see the classic Friends inspired Ross and Rachel shenanigans in our future with Ben shouting, “but we were on a break!” when he encounters Julie next.

The rest of this episode of Ben 10: Ultimate Alien didn’t offer too many long term plot developments and by the end of the episode we’re pretty much exactly where we started. Eunice turns out to be a Unitrix with nature based abilities that took her form from Gwen’s blood getting into the capsule when it was first opened. Had a Ben cut his finger, or had an ant crawled inside, Eunice would have been a Eugene, or the gang might have opened up the capsule to reveal an ant. This is why I don’t think it’s very likely that Eunice will return in the future in any major way. I liked Eunice and her powers made for some interesting moments so I would not have minded the addition of another alien powered girl in the mix.

Sunder returns in this episode as the primary antagonist, but even that turns out to be anticlimactic as we realize that Sunder is just a hired hand for Asmuth who pulled him out of the Null Void for the purpose of recovering the Unitrix.

I’m somewhat surprised that this was the season opener only because I think this episode stands alone so well and doesn’t necessarily hook you into coming back to watch the next episode. I could be wrong and maybe Asmuth has something up his sleeve so Eunice and Sunder will be back this season in a big way, but just from this episode, it doesn’t appear to be the case. Despite the lack of progress in the overall arc of the Ben 10: Ultimate Alien storyline, this episode was still entertaining. The introduction of Eunice and her powers was intriguing, the fight scenes were cool and there was no shortage of classic Kevin quips, so at the very least it was a really fun intro into this new season.
