Steve Carell Leaving THE OFFICE Sooner Than You Think

Steve Carell

While it’s not news that Steve Carell is leaving THE OFFICE (and taking his character Michael Scott with him), what you may not know is how soon that’s going to happen. According to TVLine.com, Carrel will make his final appearance on NBC’s beloved comedy well before the season itself ends later this year.

Executive producer Greg Daniels (who expects to pen Carell’s swan song himself) reveals:

“Steve is leaving earlier than the [season finale]. The big ‘Goodbye, Steve’ thing will be before [May] sweeps.”

Daniel then went on to discuss what the final weeks of the season will be about:

“Our basic plan is to see the jockeying and interviewing [for Michael’s job], and not have that happen off-camera and suddenly present America with the choice. We’d rather play out the stories of the various characters who want that seat, and show them fight for it. It’s kind of a fun situation and the chaos is creatively exciting.”

Reportedly Kathy Bates will be coming along to help with the process of selecting Michael’s successor. The actress will be reprising her role of Jo Bennett, the country-fried CEO of Dunder-Mifflin’s parent company, Sabre. Bates already has completed filming the first season of her new series, NBC’s Harry’s Law.

Says Daniels about Kathy’s return:

“We’re going to play out the whole [replacement] process in a realistic way. And it’s always great to have Kathy here.”

The outcome of the interview process will make up much of the season finale, which is currently set to run an hour. Having that extra time might be a good thing as it will give time to show each of the various employees’ reactions to the new boss.

Daniels notes:

“They’re all different people with strong personalities, so they each have a lot invested in who’s their new boss.”
