NCIS “Recruited” Review

NCIS (CBS) Recruited

NCIS “Recruited” Season 8 Episode 12 – They hit upon some tough issues in tonight’s episode. First there was Ducky’s predecessor, Dr. Magnus (played by the absolutely wonderful and charming Bob Newhart) dropping by for what seems like an innocent visit. But as time went on we could see that something wasn’t right and it turned out the man was dealing with Alzheimer’s and hoped that by returning to his old job, he could remember all the things he kept forgetting. It really saddened me, especially when he mentioned how his job at NCIS had been all that he had. Interesting coming from a man who had been married and still had a daughter and grandsons. It made me very worried for Ducky, who has none of those things, and I truly hope that he and the rest of Team Gibbs stay good friends. None of them have anyone else so they’re really going to need each other.

Then there was the case itself, and the young man who, even after all that he’d been through and all that he knew he was going to have to go through, still made the decision to serve his country. I’m not going to open a discussion about DADT because I don’t think this is the forum for it and I’m sure it’s been talked to death in other places. What I will say is that no matter where your opinion falls, you can’t tell me that you didn’t admire that kid a lot.

My favorite bits….

The moment Bob Newhart walked into the squadroom. I love him so much and I used to watch Newhart all the time.

Tony asking Dr. Magnus if he was sure he wanted to do it in autopsy, because it was stinky.

Gibbs actually singing along with Tony for a chorus of “The Wheels on the Bus.” The only thing that would have made that better was if McGee had joined in.

Grossing out at Dr. Magnus’ story about a sailor ending up in the calamari. Eeewww.

Gibbs telling Vance he was happy to have him back, because I realized I felt the same way and that surprised me.

Gibbs telling Vance to suck it up and move on.

Dr. Magnus admitting that he hadn’t understood one word from Abby but he was all for it. LOL.

Dr. Magnus stumbling over his words and accidentally saying how he’d have given anything to “have hardware like her.”

Dr. Magnus’ surprise when Gibbs kissed Abby. Man, I’m so used to it but yeah, I guess that would be strange to an outsider.

Agreeing with Tony, I’m betting McGee was a sickly child too. I mean seriously, is there anything he’s NOT allergic to?

Freaking out when the wackjob grabbed McGee and put him under the saw. Eep!!

Giggling so hard at Dr. Magnus asking for Willy Wong’s Wok.

The way Gibbs got the wife to admit she had a lot of hate in her. I just loved how he walked over and started talking really softly and suddenly she’s actually telling the truth and not just hiding behind her anger.

Vance telling Gibbs that his case was a hell of a can of worms and Gibbs replying that someone had to open it. Gibbs is awesome.

Feeling so sad when Abby and Ducky finally found Dr. Magnus, especially when he asked where he was.

Tony standing his ground when the car was coming at him.

Gibbs telling the kid’s dad that he still had a father, so he should start acting like one.

Dr. Magnus admitting that he’d come back to NCIS because he hoped that he’d get his memory back and that sometimes he couldn’t remember who he was. Ugh, that totally broke my heart.

Busting into tears during the whole final sequence – from Ducky setting up all the “memories” for Dr. Magnus, to Gibbs being there when Paul decided to join the Navy.

What did you think of this episode of NCIS? Got any favorite bits or least favorite bits of your own? I’d love to hear from you!
