MTV has picked up another drama to add to its rapidly expanding portfolio of scripted original series.

According to Deadline.com, the network has chosen I JUST WANT MY PANTS BACK, a project that will be based on the book by David Rosen.

The series, a co-production with Doug Liman and Dave Bartis’ Hypnotic and Universal Cable Prods, has been described as an “youthful romantic dramedy set in New York City.” Rosen adapted his novel for the series, which will center on 22-year-old Jason Strider and his friends who grapple with dating, romance and becoming adults

I Just Want My Pants Back has been a passion project for Liman for years. Originally developed for NBC, Liman and Bartis managed to bring the script to MTV, thanks to their relationship with UCP, where they executive produce USA’s Covert Affairs.

MTV subsequently greenlighted the project with Liman directing, his first pilot directing gig in more than 3 years. Liman will direct several episodes in addition to the pilot, and his duties as executive producer.

MTV’s head of programming David Janollari said:

“[In the end, Pants]found its right home. It has an amazing, authentic 20-something voice, feels contemporary and relatable and will connect with our audience.”

This will be the UCP’s first series for a non-NBCU network, plus a rare co-production with an unaffiliated production company for MTV.

The studio’s SVP, Maira Suro said:

“To produce such an edgy, cool series with Doug Liman and MTV is an amazing opportunity for UCP. It’s a major step for the studio as we expand our business outside of the NBCU family.”

Pants joins other original scripted series at MTV that includes The Hard Times of RJ Berger, Teen Wolf and the upcoming Skins, That Girl and Death Valley.
