Dominic Purcell To Join SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND?

Lincoln (Dominic Purcell)

Now that the long-delayed second season of SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND has officially been given the go-ahead, I’m sure many fans are wondering who will replace cancer-stricken series star Andy Whitfield as Rome’s most famous gladiator.

According to Deadline.com, the next actor to step into the arena might just turn out to be Prison Break star Dominic Purcell.

Starz’s boss Chris Albrecht has said that everyone at the network is “confident that we will find an actor who can ably step into Spartacus’ sandals.” Reportedly later that same day, the pay network’s executives got a screen test for the role from the former Prison Break star. Some have said that throwing Purcell’s name into the mix is an intriguing idea. After all the man does have the build to pull off a believable (not to mention badass) gladiator. Purcell was reportedly vacationing in his native Australia and taped himself there, then emailed the clip to Starz brass. It was a bold move, which could turn out to be the right one if he ends up getting the part.

Also rumored to be in serious contention for the role is Australian actor Liam McIntyre. The actor is reportedly bulking up for the part as apparently the network execs did like his November screen test, but felt that his thin frame was a problem.

No word yet on what the network’s final decision will be. If Purcell does get the lead though, it will be very reminiscent of how he got cast in FOX’s Prison Break, where he was cast just 3 days before the pilot was set to go into production. In yet another coincidence, Purcell’s Prison Break co-star Wentworth Miller reportedly expressed interest in taking over the Spartacus: Blood and Sand role back in October.
