OFF THE MAP “Saved by the Great White Hope” Review

OFF THE MAP (NBC) Saved by the Great White Hope

OFF THE MAP “Saved by the Great White Hope” Season 1 Episode 1 – This show reminds me more of Grey’s Anatomy than Private Practice. The way that the storylines are set up, the music, the humor – it’s reminiscent of its older sister show, but not so much that I found it distracting.

The story is pretty basic – a bunch of doctors out in the middle of the jungle who have to deal with barriers to delivering great medical care. Things like lack of proper equipment and medicine and also the occasional patient who doesn’t believe in modern medicine. But it was done well and with all those elements that reminded me of Grey’s. Plus, the effects were good, maybe a little too good actually. Considering the turn my stomach gave when they gave a close-up of that guy’s arm as Lily cut it out.

Another thing I liked were all the individual storylines. I don’t know why but I didn’t expect to get to know the patients so well. I guess I figured they’d just be part of the background – people screaming in pain and speaking in languages the doctors don’t understand. But as it turns out, some of the best moments came from those patients. I realize now that I shouldn’t have been surprised. This is a Shonda Rhimes show after all and in both Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice, the patients play a large role in the stories of the doctors. Because it’s through those patients that we learn more about the doctors themselves, like how some of them came to be at the clinic.

My favorite bits…

The chick fleeing the clinic and advising Lily to take the cab driver’s card.

The girls “objectifying one of the greatest humanitarians of our time”. Yeah, I was kinda doing that, too.

Cracking up that Tommy was so clueless he didn’t even know what “gringo” meant.

The expletive that left me when I saw the patient hanging from the wires.

Tommy’s makeshift AMA.

Mina reporting that she’d just lost 50 pesos on a grudge match between a scorpion and a tarantula.

Mina, Tommy and Lily enjoying the joys of the fan and following it back and forth.

The sight of Lily and Ben running into the operating room with those coconuts.

Tommy telling the father that he’d lost his family because he was proud and he didn’t want the man to make the same mistake.

Mina’s story about how she ended up as a doctor in the jungle and why “sometimes it is zebras.”

The lady’s heart felt reaction to getting the inhaler.

All of Tommy’s scenarios as to why he and Mina might sleep together.. and the fact that she said ‘no’ to each one.

Mina holding that chicken. LOL.

Ed sending his wife with the fireflies.

The chick from the taxi showing up on Ben’s couch and turning out to be his girlfriend? Hm, interesting.

First Lily, then Mina and finally Tommy diving off the cliff.

What did you think of the premiere of Off The Map? Got any favorite bits or least favorite bits of your own? I’d love to hear from you!
