Oprah Winfrey’s Network to Debut in 85 Million Homes

OWN, Oprah Winfrey’s new cable channel, launches Saturday and will be immediately available in around 85 million homes. The Wrap reports that this is due in part to a deal reached Tuesday between OWN and Cablevision Systems Corp to bring OWN to about 3.5 million homes in the New York metropolitan area. Details of the agreement are not known.

Because OWN is replacing the current Discovery Health Channel, other cable and satellite providers like Comcast, Time Warner, and DirecTV will automatically carry OWN, but Cablevision didn’t offer Discovery Health Channel, making this deal necessary to fill a hole in OWN’s coverage area.

Given that there are approximately 116 million television households, this is impressive coverage for a new channel, but it is Oprah Winfrey, after all.
