HAWAII FIVE-0 “Hana ‘a’a Makehewa” Review

HAWAII FIVE-0 (CBS) "Hana 'a'a Makehewa"

HAWAII FIVE-0 “Hana ‘a’a Makehewa” Season 1 Episode 12 – We’ve had some moments of drama on this show, but nothing so far compares to the opening scenes of this episode with Chin sitting in the middle of the street with a bomb around his neck. After that they took us back in time and we find out that the person who put him there was none other than Victor Hesse, the man who killed McGarrett’s father.

I liked that, though they did bring back a man who was shot twice in the chest and should be fish food, they took great pains to walk us through everything he did when he dragged himself out of the water. We weren’t left just to wonder how he survived, we got to see the doctor who fixed him up. It made him still the villain, but a human one, which took Hesse’s return from feeling like something out of a comic book and brought it firmly back into reality.

I also liked that we finally got to find out the story of what happened when Chin was framed and accused of taking payoffs. They way they worked it into this episode, with the money from the case being the one thing that could save his life, was very clever.

This episode wrapped up one loose end but left a few more the rest of the season. Between Hesse talking with Wo Fat about how close McGarrett was getting to the case that killed his father and the money going up in smoke, there’s plenty of excitement still to come.

My favorite bits..

The way the episode started in the middle of the action.

McGarrett telling Chin that if he wasn’t wearing a bomb suit, neither were they.

All the views of the Hawaiian holidays.

Poor Danny with his pathetic little Charlie Brown Christmas tree.

Danny calling Kamekona “Santy Claus” and demanding the King’s English in his house.

Finding out that Danny dresses up as Santa for his daughter every year. Aw.

McGarrett spotting Hesse in the video and demanding to speak to the Governor.

Chin telling McGarrett the next time he steps on Hesse, he should keep his foot on him.

The conversation in the car as McGarrett barreled towards the guys standing in the road. Good thing they moved cuz I don’t think McGarrett was gonna stop.

Danny advising McGarrett to shoot Hesse in the face next time.

McGarrett telling Danny, as someone raised by a single father, that all she was gonna remember was spending Christmas with her dad. Aw, so sweet.

Danny telling Sang Min that he missed his smile.

Just about losing it when Hesse casually sauntered into the room and came face to face with McGarrett, and then completely losing it when Sing Man took off with him in his car. Holy crap!

McGarrett apparently having the power to stop taxi cabs with his mind. All he did was hold out his hand!

McGarrett and Danny having to tell Chin that the Governor wasn’t going to give them the money.

Kono’s panic when she showed up at the scene.

Danny calling McGarrett Superman and saying he just wanted to measure the level of insanity.

The entire plan to get the money almost being ruined by a little old lady.

Chin and Kono’s “Aloha” to each other when she left to go to the money drop.

Complete shock when Hesse through the money on the fire.

McGarrett picking Hesse up off of his feet and throwing him to the ground. Whoa.

Danny and Chin sharing a hug after they got the bomb off.

McGarrett calling Danny “tubsy”.

Wait. That’s Danny’s car? OMG I totally forgot. I’m with him, McGarrett definitely does have control issues. LOL.

Chin asking McGarrett if he learned to sew in the SEALS and everyone working together to get the suit ready. I liked that Danny’s method of alteration involved a stapler.

Danny’s “Merry Christmas please!” from the bedroom when everyone else said “Mele Kalikimaka” to Grace.

The way they had me fooled into thinking that everything was over – the team bonding, Christmas music, fireworks, etc – and then seeing Wo Fat visiting Hesse in jail to discuss how close McGarrett was getting to the truth about what happened to his father.
