SUPERNATURAL “Appointment in Samarra” Review

SUPERNATURAL (CW) Appointment in Samarra

SUPERNATURAL “Appointment in Samarra” Season 6 Episode 11 – Dean dying isn’t anything new, but this time he does it so he can talk to Death and make a deal to get Sam’s soul back. When Death agrees on the condition that Dean take his place for a day, it’s all rainbows and lollipops at first. An a-hole robbing a store and threatening to shoot a little kid? No problem, Dean even waits a few minutes to enjoy that one. Stupid guy eating fatty foods he knows he’s not supposed to? Nothing to it.

Things get tougher though when Dean has to take the life of a little girl and sees the mess that happens when he refuses to do it. By trying to save a life, all he ends up doing is ruining another and the pain he was trying to prevent doesn’t go away, it just gets transferred and expands.

Meanwhile, Soulless Sam is busy trying to save his own life, as wacky as that sounds. He’s a different guy than the brother Dean wants back and, feeling as though Dean is going to “kill” him, he makes his own deal. Sam making a deal, whether it be with a demon or angel, is nothing new, what was new was him agreeing to patricide (the act of killing one’s father).

You know, I keep thinking I can predict how these episodes will go, but I’m wrong almost every time. This time I saw Dean wandering around as Death for a little while but giving up in the end and losing the deal. Interesting that Death kept up his end of the bargain anyway.

I was so glad he did, too. When Sam was tied up and Bobby and Dean were discussing the fact they couldn’t keep him that way, I understood how helpless they felt. So far Soulless Sam had been, for the most part, harmless. That all ended the moment he tried to kill Bobby.

So they end the episode with Death bringing back Sam’s soul (something I really didn’t see happening until later in the season) and now we’re left to wonder what will happen to him. Will he “scratch” at the wall? What did Death mean when he told Dean that it was all about the souls? We’re just going to have to wait and see.

My favorite bits…

Robert Englund playing “Dr. Robert”. LOL, very inventive there, guys.

Dr. Robert bragging over his “almost 75%” success rate.

Dean handing the doc a letter for Ben in case he didn’t make it. Aw.

Okay I know he did it on purpose and it’s certainly not the first time we’ve seen it happen, but it’s still kinda hard to watch Dean die.

The fact that Dean didn’t hesitate to pick Sam over Adam.

The irony of this bit:
Dean: “Are you being serious?”
Death: “No, I’m being incredibly sarcastic.”

Bobby’s “I’m sorry I didn’t get that” in reply to Dean’s utter silence when asked what his half of the deal was.

Dean promising not to let Sam get hurt.

Tessa referring to Dean as a “slack-jawed haircut”.

Sam unknowingly echoing Dean’s “desperate times” when Balthazar asked why he had summoned him.

Dean’s guess that one of the questions he might be asked is “How did Betty White outlast me?”

Dean actually letting the guy suffer for a minute before he took him. Whoa, I thought he’d have a harder time than that, even if the guy was a dick.

This line: “Enjoy the ride down, pal. Trust me, the sauna gets hot.”

Dean asking the guy where he got the pizza.

Dean quoting Kansas to explain it all and Tessa making excuses for it by saying he was new. LOL.

Bobby knocking Sam down and saying he may have been born at night, but it wasn’t last night. Yeah Bobby!

Bobby telling Sam not to say “Here’s Johnny!” – LOL, I was so expecting him to do it, too.

Bobby saying “balls!” again. Love it.

Bobby announcing: “Ain’t nobody killing me in my house, but me.” and then “I don’t wanna blow your legs out boy, but I will” – okay seriously, can I marry Bobby?

Dean pulling off his own disappearing act. Nice.

Being about as shocked as the husband was when Dean pulled off the ring and screamed at him to pull over.

The father waking up when Dean told him to say his goodbyes.

Totally cheering when Dean showed up, said “Sam, I’m back” and then knocked his brother out cold before he could kill Bobby.

The Sam and Dean staredown through the window of the panic room. Whoa.

Death calling Sam and Dean an affront to the balance of the universe. Yep, that sounds about right.

Literally screaming out “bastards!” when I saw where they ended the episode. No new ones until January 28? *curls into fetal position and whimpers*

What did you think of this episode of Supernatural? Are you happy that Sam got his soul back or more worried about him than before? Got any favorite bits or least favorite bits of your own? I’d love to hear from you!
