GLEE “Furt” Review

GLEE “Furt” Season 2 Episode 8 – That sound you heard on tonight’s episode of Glee was wedding bells, as Burt and Carole finally tied the knot and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. If that wasn’t enough coupling, Sue decided to marry herself, Sam gave Quinn a promise ring, and the new stepbrothers became “Furt.” Now that I’ve seen this episode, I think every wedding should feature a musical number.

Much to this Gleek’s delight, the legendary Carol Burnett guest starred as Sue’s Nazi-hunting mother. I can’t think of too many actresses who could portray the bullying mom to Jane Lynch’s Sue, but she did it well. To me, Carol Burnett is like Betty White—I wish she could guest star on all my favorite shows. I had never heard the song “Ohio” before and therefore had no expectations, so it was a treat to hear her and Jane Lynch harmonize beautifully together.

Kurt and Karofsy’s bullying storyline continued, with New Directions sticking up for Kurt and the adults finally getting involved. It was nice to see Sam, Mike, Artie, and Puck stand up for Kurt in the locker room. And who knew Sue would make such a good principal? I can’t really blame Kurt for wanting to leave McKinley, but it sucks that he’s leaving after everyone fought for him. What do you think of his decision?

We should also talk about Finn and Santana because I think there’s a reason they reminded us about their hookup last season. Santana doesn’t like Rachel and I don’t think she’ll keep the secret for much longer. That’s going to mean trouble for Finn and Rachel.

I tend to like the episodes of Glee that focus on the adults, so I really liked “Furt.” Burt is one awesome TV dad, and his and Carole’s vows were so moving. Plus, Finn’s speech and song at the wedding (“Just the Way You Are”) were incredibly sweet. While it feels like Glee has been all about Kurt lately, I’m glad they didn’t wrap up the bullying story quickly because that wouldn’t be very realistic. At the same time, sectionals are next week and it just seems sudden because there has been little buildup to the competition. I’ve enjoyed the past few episodes, but I’m anxious for New Directions to focus on being a glee club.

A few random observations:
Not one, but two LOST references tonight: Burt mentioned the show at the top of the episode (“We’re gonna go to the hotel where they put up the guest stars on Lost“) and the same actor who played Doc Artz played Mr. Karafosky.

Finn referenced “Finchel” and “Puckleberry.”

“Marry You” was the perfect song for the wedding scene and I thought it was a lot of fun. I think Burt and Carole’s wedding ranks right up there with Jim and Pam’s wedding on The Office.

Mr. Schue’s “Sway” made me swoon.

Sue’s tracksuit wedding dress was ridiculously awesome.

So what did you think of tonight’s episode of Glee, “Furt?” What do you think of Kurt’s decision to transfer schools? What are your predictions for sectionals? Let me know in the comments.
