David Tennant Headlines BBC Film UNITED

David Tennant

David Tennant (Dr. Who) will star in the BBC’s upcoming dramatic film UNITED, based on the true story of Manchester United’s legendary “Busby Babes,” the youngest side ever to win the English Football League, the 1958 Munich Air Crash that claimed eight of the their number, and the extraordinary spirit of a city that rebuilt the team in the wake of the disaster.

Tennant will play Coach Jimmy Murphy while Jack O’Connell and Sam Claflin will star as Babes players Bobby Charlton and Duncan Edwards. The script was written by Chris Chibnall (Law & Order: UK) and James Strong (Dr. Who, Hustle) will direct. Production starts later this month.

The Munich Air Crash killed 22 of the 44 passengers onboard, including supporters, journalists and embassy staff and United draws on first-hand interviews with the survivors and their families to tell the inspirational story of a team and community overcoming terrible tragedy.

Simon Heath, Executive Producer, World Productions, says: “Chris Chibnall has written an authentic and moving version of this heartbreaking story, which with the help of a great cast, we hope will be a fitting tribute to those who survived and those who lost their lives at Munich.”

United will air on BBC Two.
