THE VAMPIRE DIARIES “Katerina” Review

The Vampire Diaries

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES “Katerina” Season 2 Episode 9 – We were treated to a hearty helping of backstory in this episode with Katherine filling us in on her turning and the vampire/werewolf curse – which were interlinked.

With the Petrova’s tied into the curse by blood, Elena has no way out of her involvement with it. An interesting sidenote: if Klaus wanted Katerina/Katherine because she was a doppelgänger, then there have been at least three women who look identical so far. We know Elena’s real mother, Isobel, isn’t one, but what about Isobel’s mother? Have we heard anything about her yet?

I really enjoyed the Elena-Katherine interaction this episode. I know I’m usually hard on Elena, but she was incredibly likable. As Katherine says, she has “the Petrova fire”. Apparently it just needed to be unearthed. And talking about unearthing things (shut up, I know it’s a tenuous link since she wasn’t buried): how the hell did Katerina hang herself so quickly?

FYI: I love flashbacks for one very shallow reason: the cute dead guys can come back. Why hello, Trevor!

I also loved the Stefan and Caroline interaction. There’s a strange little chemistry between those two, one that could easily seem romantic, if not for Stefan automatically assuming a paternal role. He seems to treat Caroline as his child, whether he intends to or not, wanting to both guide and protect her. It’s adorable to see and a great touch in a series that lacks much real healthy family time. His comparing her to Lexi showed that he doesn’t do this out of a sense of duty either, but rather because he genuinely likes and cares about her. I never like Stefan more than when he’s around Caroline.

Poor Jeremy. Just when he and Witchy B are getting all cute and she’s coming around to the idea of seeing him as more than ‘Elena’s brother’ along comes Luca. That dude has two things going for him: he’s good looking and he’s a warlock. But fear not, Jeremy, because Luca’s daddy is in with the bad vamps. This will either lead to Luca being a bad guy himself or him turning against his father. One of those options will help you get the girl, Jer, just be patient. Also, keep on smiling. You’re cute when you smile.

Speaking of Jeremy, Slater made me laugh right out loud today. I keep telling people that Jeremy is like a mini-Jared Padalecki. Jared is on Supernatural, he’s one of the three regular actors along with Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins. I bring this up because Slater was a total mini-Misha Collins, right down to the look and body language. He was awesome, I wish Elijah hadn’t killed him.

Elijah. What the hell is with that guy? While the character is a great antagonist, I take issue to him suddenly morphing into Remy ‘Gambit’ LeBeau (see: the X-Men). You have a vampire that can follow any vampire lore (including any lore centered around vampire-like creatures from around the world) and instead of finding a trait that’s vampire-like, you give him kinetically charged coins? I may be wrong – if anyone can find lore that involves vampires with that ability, shoot me a link. [Henceforth, Elijah shall be known as Gambit.]

Damon and Rose done sex, people. I’m not sure how I feel about this. Mostly because as much as I want to like Lauren Cohen, I can’t get over her accent, though I love her hair. [Props to Nina Dobrev for her brilliant English accent, whch was not too forced and not too hokey.] I think I’d prefer if she was his Lexi, but then this is Damon. He seems like he would be incapable of hanging with a pretty girl without trying to get into her pants, so I’ll let it slide.

And at least she doesn’t look like Katherine/Elena too! I mean, Cheesus! Now Trevor loved Katerina too? Nina Dobrev may have legs that just don’t quit – and I wouldn’t exactly say no to being trapped in that tomb with Katherine, you know what I’m sayin’? – but all these people fall in love with her characters? What are we up to now, 4 or 5? Stefan and Damon for both Katherine and Elena, Hot Uncle Lockwood and Trevor for just Katherine, maybe Matt for Elena – I feel like I’m missing someone out. You remember anyone else?

So come on, guys, spill: what did you think of this week’s episode? And what do you think may be coming next on The Vampire Diaries? I’d speculate but I’m too worried they’ll kill more cute guys next week. Someone find Jeremy a safe room, pronto!
