DEXTER “First Blood” Advance Review

DEXTER "First Blood"

DEXTER “First Blood” Season 5 Episode 5 – Dexter begans to wonder if Harrison is doomed to follow in his footsteps despite his early age in tonight’s episode of DEXTER. When your messed up childhood is basically replayed through your son, it would be hard to not to think the worst. But is Dexter just seeing what he expects and not what is really there or will Harrison grow up with a taste for blood as well?

I was able to get a sneak peek of tonight’s episode of Dexter titled “First Blood” and I have to say it was pretty good despite plot lines coming from every direction. The title applies to even more than Dexter’s growing concern over his son. It also applies to Julia Stiles’ character, Lumen, and her desire to seek out and administer her own kind of revenge against the other men that were involved in the abduction and torture of she and the other women. It also applies to Dexter who soon finds himself in the position of almost killing someone without knowing the guy’s complete background and for a reason other than the code. We have seen this happen once with Dexter with the guy in the background after Rita’s death. Will this start to become a pattern? Will this be the downfall of Dexter?

I thought this episode did an excellent job of moving the various plots along and cramming quite a bit of story into one hour. In addition to the above, we see Quinn still stalking Dexter and suffering ramifications because of it. We find out that the bar brawl between Batista and the other cop brought out issues of trust between Batista and Laguerta. Those two might have married a bit too soon. Meanwhile, Deb gets a better lead for the Santa Muerte murders but ends up finding more dead bodies.

Although I am kind of eager to have Dexter return to his killing ways, I like the direction they are taking with Julia Stiles’ character. We never quite know if she is an ally or a foe and the tension just keeps mounting. It also appears that she might not be the most stable person around. Is anyone surprised? I think Dexter is going to find himself lost when he cannot control her as the only way he knows how to control someone is to kill them.
