SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND Recasting Lead Role

Spartacus

When Andy Whitfield had to drop out of SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND to continue treatment for Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, it was reported that executive producer Steven S. DeKnight saw two potential options for the Starz series: “to close up shop or recast.” It looks like the latter choice won out.

Entertainment Weekly reports that producers have issued a casting call for an actor with an authentic British accent to play the “smart, intense, passionate” title role. Additionally, those auditioning must be willing to sign a three-year contract.

This is an incredibly difficult situation. I wish production could have been postponed until Whitfield was healthy and available, but that wasn’t an option, so all that’s left is to wish Whitfield a full recovery and show producers good luck in the recast.

Do you think producers made the right decision? Will you watch Spartacus: Blood and Sand with a new leading man?
