HBO’s BOARDWALK EMPIRE: The Lowdown

Boardwalk Empire

The new HBO drama series BOARDWALK EMPIRE premieres tonight, September 19, and Daemon’s TV had a chance to take a peek at the first episode of the show. Here is the lowdown on what you can expect from Boardwalk Empire:

Sopranos? Is that you?
Comparing this show is an easy thing to do. All the elements are here: Central conflicted anti-hero, gangsters galore, illegal trades, loose girls, shadiness, bad guys, good guys, “kind of in the middle guys”. It’s all there. Even Al Capone is in the mix. However as much as it is like The Sopranos, it’s not The Sopranos. It differentiates itself enough that we are not constantly thinking about Tony and his pals.

Prohibition = War on Drugs
Also clear are the parallels you can pull from the era of prohibition and our current times of War on Drugs. I swear that listening to the bozos pontificating on the dangers of alcohol can easily be compared to the ones whining about the dangers of drugs. Not that I am advocating for drugs but I still find myself debating the methods used to fight its consumption. I digress but you get my point.

History Buffs Rejoice
The historical accuracy is so vivid that you find yourself fascinated by that period of time where there was such a thing as nurseries with storefronts where passerbys can see newborns being weighted. I know right? Weird but interesting. History buffs of the prohibition era will be particularly happy to check out these little tidbits that are just chokeful in Boardwalk Empire.

Too Early to Tell
It is simply to early to tell if Boardwalk Empire is going to be a hit like The Sopranos. It so far lacks some water cooler elements that you can hang your hat on such as characters to root for, crazy scenes, etc. But I think there is enough to make you want to watch more of the show. Pay attention to some very interesting scenes between Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) & Jimmy Darmody (Michael Pitt) which should offer some interesting storylines going forward. I for one, will follow a few more episodes to make up my mind.

Don’t forget to catch the premiere of Boardwalk Empire tonight, September 19, at 9 pm on HBO. In the meantime, check out the Boardwalk Empire episode photos and preview.
