HUNG “Even Steven” or “The Luckiest Kid in Detroit” Season Finale Review

Hung (Season 2) - Jane Adams, Thomas Jane, Rebecca Creskoff

This week’s episode of HUNG called “Even Steven” or “The Luckiest Kid in Detroit” was the Season 2 Finale. In this episode we find the characters trying to make amends and trying to fix all that went wrong this season.

First, after a delightful swim in the lake and some making out in Ray’s tent, Jessica abruptly leaves Ray to go back home. Ray, of course, cannot let her go and even while they are in the tent thinks to himself that if he could just say the right thing to her, Jessica would stay. It is clear though that Jessica was never going to stay. She used Ray as a jumping point to start her life anew and without men. However, by not telling Ray this, Jessica leaves Ray planning ways to win her over including selling his house to get money to woo her. This epsiode showed us that Ray has no real understanding as to why Jessica left him and Jessica has done a rather poor job explaining it. While it is true that one who leaves another does not need to give them a full detailed explanation as to why they are leaving, after 20 years of marraige and the obvious feelings Jessica has for Ray, you would think she would have done a little better. I think a little time off from men will be good for Jessica even if it means the twins have to share a tiny hotel room with their mother. Ray decides to pay Lenore as much as he can and quit the business while he decides what to do about Jessica. Lenore demands more money and belittles Ray for his feelings for Jessica and anything else she can think of to throw at him. That woman is a piece of work. I would love to see something come along to make Lenore vulnerable for once.

Also making amends, and in desperate need to do so, is Tanya. After receiving advice from a surprising source, Damon, Tanya decides to try to fix what she has messed up. First, she starts with Francis who she finally convinces to give her a listen. She admits that she was wrong and stupid and basically tells Francis that Mike is in love with her and that is all that matters. It doesn’t matter how they met. It doesn’t matter what happened to tear them apart (ahem, Tanya). All that matters is that they genuininely care about each other. She encourages Francis to give Mike another chance. Meanwhile, Ray is also trying to make amends in the Mike/Francis saga and tries to get Mike to talk to him through their coaching. Finally, he tells Mike almost exactly what Tanya told Francis, Mike and Francis belong together. Later, Mike dressed in a suit takes flowers and candy to a very touched Francis. Perhaps they have a chance after all.

Tanya also seeks out her mother, although not necessarily to make amends. She needs the necklace and the money back so she can return Francis’ money. In order to do so, she has to admit that she was wrong, that she could not afford the gift or the money. Whether Tanya’s mother did so from an “I told you so” perspective or whether she actually could see the need and terror in her daughter’s face, she does return the necklace and the money. Tanya then goes to Ray with the money to try to make it right with him. When he says it is not enough, Tanya finally loses it and practically begs Ray to forgive her. And so he does. He admits that he is still in love with Jessica and Tanya offers to help him out. After all, they were Happiness Consultants at one point until, as Tanya puts it, “they forgot the happiness part.”

Meanwhile in Jessica land, Ronnie calls Mindy in order to get a ride home from the convention as Jessica and the kids took off without him. Mindy shows up with her husband and it is evident that nothing is going right in their marriage. When Mindy’s husband goes into the gas station for some beef jerky, Mindy decides she wants some jerky with Ronnie who is caught off guard and almost terrorized. He laters confesses this indiscretion to Jessica, altering the details so that it is he that tells Mindy to stop what she is doing rather than stopping because her husband was returning. Ronnie then declares he and Jessica “Even Steven” since she saw a dermatologist behind his back, albeit for a medical reason and not a handjob. Jessica tells him she needs space from him and the kids and her mother.

In the end, Ray decides not to sell his house after Jessica reminds him how much he loves it and after the kids tell him that they don’t want him to sell it either. They feel like homeless orphans living in a hotel room with their belongings at Ronnie’s. Ray remembers how he felt the first time he was in that house, like the luckiest kid in Detroit. His goal is to get back to that feeling.
