Dani’s Top 5 TV Shows: #3 – ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT

Arrested Development cast

Now I am down to my top 3 shows of all time. Tough choices were made! Many shows were left behind for this slot such as Gilmore Girls and My So Called Life. The latter was especially sad because it never made it past the first season. That may be a good thing, though, since I remember it as perfection. What show could possibly beat these shows out as #3 on my list? ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT.

I was late to the Arrested Development bandwagon stumbling upon it about a year or two after it came out. Thanks to Netflix, though, I quickly caught up. I feel I am a better person for it.

What the show is about

The show centers around an oddball family, the Bluths. The patriarch of the family, George Bluth, Sr., is arrested by the SEC and sent to prison. The family is then left to pick up the pieces of the family and the family business. Lucille Bluth, the matriarch, makes bad business decisions, drinks too much, and spends most of her time coddling her youngest son, Buster. Buster is a grown man with a child’s name and an even more immature personality. Gob is the eldest son who has probably the least amount of interest in the family business as he fancies himself an actor. The sanest one of the bunch is Michael, the middle child who attempts to center the family, run the business and be a good role model for his son, George Michael. Finally, there is Lindsay, the Bluth’s daughter who has a flamboyant husband and a rather homely daughter. I cannot even begin to explain all of the quirks, scenarios and shenanigans that occur throughtout the seasons.

Why I love it

The thing that originally caught my eye was Jason Bateman. He plays the middle son, Michael. I would say that this show began the Jason Batemen comeback, and with good cause. His comedic timing and dry wit delivery of lines was spot on. Although the scenarious and plot lines tended to be outrageous, the cast of very talented actors managed to pull it off. Every episode only left me wanting more. Really, where else can you see, not only Jason Batement, but also Portia de Rossi (Lindsey), Michael Cera (George Michael), Jeffrey Tambor (George Bluth, Sr and his twin – yes a twin – Oscar), and Will Arnett (Gob) in one show? In addition to the exceptional regular cast, the show also had a host of recurring celebirities such as Scott Baio, Henry Winkler, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Judy Greer, Liza Minelli, Amy Poehler (Will Arnett’s real life wife playing Gob’s wife), and Charlize Theron.

Why you should watch it

If the cast and special guest appearances don’t automatically make you want to run out and rent the entire collection and watch it this weekend, I will try to further persuade you. Arrested Development is comic genius. I honestly cannot think of another show that had me laughing so much and repeating lines for days and weeks to come. Another quirky thing about this show? At the end of each episode it would be announced “On the next episode of Arrested Development” which sounded like a preview of the next weeks’ show but was really in fact just contnuing plot lines from that particular show that would not appear or segue way into the next show at all. Arrested Development is a fan favorite and has enjoyed a huge cult following. Although cancelled in 2006, to date there are still rumors (and hopeful wishing) about a possible movie. With the ever increasing popularity of Jason Bateman, I believe there will be even more fans flocking to this TV show. As Gob Bluth would say, “Come on!”
