Mokibobolink’s Top 5 Shows: #4 – The Original BATTLESTAR GALACTICA

Battlestar Galactica original

This week I thought I’d jump back in time and talk about a show that had a huge impact on me as a child. I don’t even have a clear memory of the first time I saw BATTLESTAR GALACTICA on TV, but I do remember how much I loved it. I used to “play” it all the time with my friends, everyone fighting over who got to be Apollo and who got to be Starbuck. Because even though we were all girls, we still wanted to be the heroes. I also remember having everything from Battlestar Galactica sheets, action figures, toys, coloring books, a lunchbox, and my prized possession – a stuffed “Muffit” (a robotic dog on the show) who barked when you pulled a string in his back.

Battlestar Galactica is a show about people occupying a group of planets known as the “Twelve Colonies” who are at war with a cybernetic race of machines called “Cylons”. The Cylons want to exterminate humans and after a brutal attack across all of the colonies, they almost succeed. The last of the humans escape in a few ships, with only one “Battlestar” class ship called the “Galactica” to protect the entire race. From then on they are constantly on the run from the Cylons, searching for a planet of humans talked about in their legends, a place known as “Earth”.

What I love about it.

Looking back on a show you loved as a child and trying to verbalize the reasons why you loved it isn’t easy. Back then I’m sure it was more about the fact that there was a character around my age on the show (a young boy named “Boxy”). Nowadays I think more about the action and adventure, the romance, the really cool costumes and the characters.

What I also loved about Battlestar Galactica was that it was mainly about the adventures of two fighter pilots, Lieutenant Starbuck and Captain Apollo. They were best friends and yet opposite in most ways, Apollo was the responsible family man and Starbuck was the playboy. I loved watching each week to see what sort of predicament would cause one or the other to save the day, which they always did of course.

Why you should watch it.

The entire planet knows that Battlestar Galactica was re-made some years ago and became a smash hit on SyFy. So why do I think that anyone should bother with the original series that was only on the air for one season? Because it’s better? No, probably not. Let’s face it, when you look at writing and storylines and, well, everything else, the re-make is probably the better show.

But the original show does have a few things going for it. First of all it’s just plain fun. It’s fun watching Starbuck always trying to bag his latest space babe, cigar sticking out of his mouth as he plays cards and spouts wisecracks. It’s fun to see the special effects they had back in the 70’s in all the space battles. It’s fun looking at the campy costumes, I mean the guys had CAPES on their uniforms for goodness sakes! Does it get any better than that?

There was romance, comedy, tons of action (space battles that remind me of WWII air battles, gun fights with awesome laser pistols) and lots of really good looking people. and all with those really nifty hair styles from the 70’s.

Behind all the fun though, there was a lot of heart too. These people are the last of their race, struggling to survive under the worst odds and fend off an enemy that has them outmanned and outgunned in every way. Yet they still fight back, showing the Cylons that they won’t go down easily.

So underneath all the wacky costumes and haircuts, Battlestar Galactica is really a show about people determined to survive.
