Mark-Paul Gosselaar Talks Rizzoli & Isles, Weeds, and More

Rizzoli & Isles

Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Raising the Bar) is guest starring in the upcoming “Money for Nothing” episode of RIZZOLLI & ISLES, and I took part in a conference call where he discussed his role and some other upcoming projects. In “Money for Nothing,” Gosselaar plays Garrett Fairfield, the middle son of a wealthy Boston family. He was also Maura’s college boyfriend, and the death of his brother and Maura’s subsequent dealings with the Fairfield family lead to friction between Jane and Maura. When asked how it was being a guest star instead of the leading man, Gosselaar replied, “I had fun and sometimes it’s a bit easier. You just show up, do your work, and go home and you don’t really need to worry about anything else.” He further said he was especially comfortable because he knew so many people at Rizzoli and Isles. “[W]orking with the two girls it was great. We had a relationship before I actually stepped foot on the set. I know – I’ve known Angie for a while. I met Sasha on our way to the upfront this year for TNT and they’re lovely. They’re great to work with. I’m also friends with the writer who wrote the episode as well as the director who directed the episode, and then, of course, my relationship with TNT. So it was a – it was a fun environment to be a part of.”

Gosselaar will also be starring in an upcoming episode of Weeds, and he teased, “That’s one [of] the most graphic episodes that they’ve done in the past. So it’s Mary-Louise and I in a bar, and then there’s a bit of a chemistry between us and we kind of go at it. So without giving too much away, it’s pretty graphic. It’s pretty – it’s pretty premium.”

Additionally, Gosselaar has been cast in TNT’s legal procedural, Franklin and Bash, set to premiere next summer, playing attorney Steven Bash. He says it’s a “fun life comedy” with elements of drama from the courtroom scenes. “It’s a buddy comedy. It’s a – we’ve used examples like Superbad and The Hangover and Wedding Crashers.” He and Breckin Meyer play ambulance chasing lawyers who agree it’s time to grow up so they take jobs at a prestigious law firm. Gosselaar said that Franklin and Bash has a “great, strong cast, and Malcolm McDowell plays the patriarch of a firm that we eventually go to work for.”

When asked if he had a preference between acting in comedies or dramas, Gosselaar said he didn’t but that at this point in his life he’s happy to be doing comedic work after so many years of more dramatic roles. He also said that since he’s been so fortunate with his television roles that he hasn’t had to actively look for film roles but plans to do so in the future. He would especially like to do an action film or comic book interpretation.
