WHITE COLLAR “Need To Know” Early Review

White Collar (USA)

I had a chance to take an early look at WHITE COLLAR‘s second episode of the season, “Need To Know,” and it verified something I had long suspected—con men and politicians are really just the same thing. Neal goes undercover to work for a dirty politician that the FBI is trying to nail, and he is so good at politics that it’s a little bit scary. If Neal ever decided to use his talents for evil (like things worse than white collar crimes), well, that would be very scary.

At the end of the previous episode Neal seemed to get his groove back, and in “Need To Know” he is definitely back to the self-assured con man we know and love. He works with Peter and Diana to take down politician Jennings (guest star David Alan Basche). It’s a really good case and Neal’s plan for catching this guy is brilliant, as well as a commentary on politics and the media. Neal’s manipulations work so well, in fact, that even poor Mozzie is fooled. Willie Garson is just hilarious, and I love that Mozzie and Peter are getting more scenes together.

Now that Marsha Thomason (Diana) is a series regular, she’s getting more screen time, and I think she’s a great addition to the show. She works well with Peter, and even though she seems immune to Neal’s charm, they have quite a bit of chemistry together. Actually, they have a few great scenes in this episodes where they get to know each better…in a hotel room.

Peter and Diana also continue their secret investigation into Kate’s death. It looks like this is going to be the overarching storyline for Season 2, with Peter getting closer to Kate’s killer each week. Neal’s search for Kate last season never felt that compelling to me, but I’m definitely intrigued by the elusive bad guy who blew up her plane.

I think if you like last week’s season premiere, you’ll also love the second episode. So don’t forget to watch White Collar on Tuesday July 20 at 9 pm on USA, and then come right back here and tell me what you think about the episode.
