THE PHANTOM (Syfy) Review

THE PHANTOM is a four-hour original Syfy movie, which premieres tonight, Sunday June 20 at 7pm with the two parts back to back.

The Phantom tells the story of Kit Walker whose family was murdered when he was a kid, but has no recollection of it. Now he is living with his adoptive parents and is a law student who does parkour in his free time. Unbeknownst to him, he is next in line to become The Phantom, a role which had been passed on from father to son for generations in his family since the 1500’s. A friend of Kit’s father reaches out to him to start training him to become the Phantom, however there are people out there part of the Singh crime syndicate, who are trying to stop him and start an international war. It is now up to The Phantom to fight them and protect the people.

I enjoyed The Phantom, it’s not as good as other Syfy films that I have seen, but it’s definitely entertaining. There are some pretty fun action sequences and the cast is decent.

Ryan Carnes who plays The Phantom is pretty good, however I didn’t really get into the love story in the film, I just didn’t feel the chemistry was there, but the good news is it’s not that big a part of the story, so you can sort of check out during those scenes.

The movie is left open-ended in some way, which I guess would work in case they decide to make a series out of it, that said, the ending was pretty cliche.

Overall, the story has some holes and some scenes could have been cut out, but if you’re just looking to have a good time and lose yourself in a superhero-type film for a few hours, you might enjoy The Phantom. So check it out when it airs tonight, June 20 starting at 7pm on Syfy.
