LOST “The End” Review

Lost Season 6 Cast

What did you think of tonight’s series finale of LOST, “The End”?

I don’t know about you, but everybody I know was watching the Lost finale tonight. I’d like to give a special shout out to a special Lost fan I know in England that got up at 4:30 AM to watch the finale spoiler-free. Lost has been on the air since 2004 and some of you have been following it loyally for 6 years. What I’d like to know is if the finale lived up to your expectations? Do you feel as though you have closure now? After months of defending this show against former fans that have fallen off the Lost wagon, I can’t help but feel a little cheated. I’ve seen a few initial reactions from fans, all of which have seemed positive. Am I the only one that was disappointed? Here was my understanding of the ending, please chime in with your own interpretations:

So, my understanding is that in the alternate reality the dead characters were oblivious to the fact that they were dead and were in a state of purgatory. As they regain their memories, they begin to understand what happened to them and they meet up in a church in a scene that was a little like the end of Lord of the Rings in that there were all getting ready to go off and die.

My understanding of the Island is that…well I guess I don’t really understand what the island was about anymore. Was it all real? Were the characters dead on the island the whole time, or did everything really happen? In the final scene (that replicated the first scene with Jack opening his eyes) Jack sees a plane and smiles. Was this the original 815 flight that goes on to LAX unscathed, or was it Kate and them getting off the island?

I guess my beef with the finale is that it kept true to it’s theme of uncertainty. Jacob never passed on all the facts to Jack when he took over and Lost didn’t pass on any of the important facts to us. I know fans will be chatting, blogging, facebooking after tonight declaring with certainty that “the island was this”, or “the plane Jack saw was that” but in the end, it’s just theory. We’ll never know any of it for sure, and after six years I felt the loyal fans of the show deserved a little more.

In the end, the only thing I feel absolutely sure about is Claire looks oddly similar to American Idol finalist Crystal Bowersox. Oh, that and the scene where Hurley and Ben pull the rope out of the water to retrieve Jack, only to find it was Desmond, was oddly similar to the scene in Goonies where Andy’s boyfriend thinks he’s pulling her out of the well but it’s only a bucket with her sweater.

If you are a fan of the show, and you were pleased with the ending, then I’m happy for you. Personally, I feel the same now as I did after every other Lost episode in that I want some freaking answers.
