Human Target is a new FOX show starring Mark Valley as Christopher Chance, a special kind of bodyguard who specializes in protecting clients against threats and eliminating said threats. He is aided in his task by his business partner/friend Winston (Chi McBride) and a tech/special ops Guerrero (Jackie Earle Haley) who help him infiltrate dangerous places and get the job done.

Human Target is one of those shows that has so much going for and against it that it’s hard to know if it’s going to even stay on the air that long. Let me start with what it has going for it.

The concept of a very pro-active bodyguard is not new but it is still a pretty cool one. Couple that with an interesting leading actor such as Mark Valley, the show is at a great start. He has the physique, look and charisma to pull it off.

In addition, the premise of the show allows for a nice slate of guest stars such as Trisha Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) in the pilot episode and Courtney Ford (from Dexter) in the second episode “Rewind” airing this Wednesday January 20 2010.

Finally, the action in the show is impressive and allows for some skillfully choreographed fight scenes which I am always a big fan of.

Unfortunately, that is all it really has going for it.

The stories and dialogues are so riddled with cliches that it actually distracts from watching the show. I kept thinking to myself: “What is so special and unique about this show that Fox decided to invest time, money and resources on it ?” When you are going through that debate, you sorta become hypervigilant and look out for signs of awesomness but to no avail.

Now is it a bad show? No.

It’s at worst just a decent action series with a decent cast and decent premise to back it all up. But you don’t build a hit show on decent. You build it on a cool, funny, intriguing, OMG, “I can’t believe what I am seeing” moments. Again, there is none of that in it.

Would I advise anyone to watch this show? Not yet.

But I would advise anyone to at least Tivo it and watch it later when they have nothing better to do. Who knows? It might pick up and start becoming a little bit more captivating. Until then, I will keep watching and hoping.

In the meantime, watch a sneak peek of the pilot episode of the new FOX show HUMAN TARGET that airs tonight Sunday, Jan. 17 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX by going here.
