FRINGE “Earthling” Review (Season 2 Episode 6)

Fringe Earthling

I had the opportunity of watching an advance copy of tomorrow night’s FRINGE Episode “Earthling” directed by Emmy Award winner Jon Cassar (24) and I wanted to share a few thoughts on it.

First let me start by saying that I am a huge Fringe fan, especially this second season. I feel that the characters are much more established and the storylines do a great job of balancing the procedural feel and the over-arching mystery. So when I got this Fringe episode, I was expecting the usual cool and gripping Fringe episode.

Well, I am happy to say that this episode met and even exceeded my expectations. This was one of the most compelling Fringe episodes of the series yet. While the investigation in “Earthling” was interesting, the most fascinating part of the episode was to see the character development, in particular Phillip Broyles (Lance Reddick) who plays a central role in the story.

Usually, I treated Broyles as a secondary character universe with the main purpose of supporting the main cast in their investigative efforts. This episode brought enough dimension to the character that I now see him in a completely different light. I don’t want to give away to much but let me tell you that Lance Reddick does a masterful job of delivering a compelling performance of a sensitive but stern man who is wrestling with the weight of his decisions. It reminds me of his fantastic performance on The Wire as Cedric Daniels. His performance made the episode worthwhile.

In short, “Earthling” is a must watch Fringe episode because of Lance Reddick’s powerful performance.
