THE UNUSUALS “Pilot” Review

The Unusuals

THE UNUSUALS is a new cop show premiering on ABC tomorrow, Wednesday April 8, at 10pm.

I know what you’re thinking, another cop show! Don’t we have enough of them? I thought the same thing. But that was until I actually watched the first episode. Now while, The Unusuals is not that original, I found myself actually enjoying the pilot. It is an ensemble piece and every character is interesting. They each have their quirks and I think that’s what is going to make The Unusuals different from other shows.

But that’s not the best part, The Unusuals has also put together quite an impressive cast which includes Amber Tamblyn, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Josh Close, Monique Gabriela Curnen, Kai Lennox, Terry Kinney and Adam Goldberg.

Are you convinced yet? No, well let me tell you a little more about the first episode then. The Unusuals starts off with Detective Casey Shraeger (Amber Tamblyn) being transferred from being an undercover hooker to the NYPD’s homicide unit. And although this is the break she was waiting for, it might not be as great as she thought it would. Shraeger is paired up with Jason Walsh (Jeremy Renner), whose last partner, Detective Burt Kowalski, was just murdered. Uninterested in his new partner, Walsh takes on Kowalski’s case and is set on finding out the truth behind his murder.

In the department, we also meet Detective Eric Delahoy (Adam Goldberg) and his partner Leo Banks (Harold Perrineau). While Delahoy is trying to kill himself for reasons that are unknown to us, Banks is quite the opposite. In fact, Banks thinks there is some kind of bad mojo on him and that he’s going to die. Now that’s a dynamic I want to see more of.

And that’s only a small taste of the variety of characters The Unusuals offers. And so it might not be the most original new show on TV, after all how original can a cop show really be, but I think you will be surprised at how entertaining and well-written The Unusuals is.

So don’t forget to tune in on Wednesdays at 10pm on ABC.
