Review: NBC’s GEMINI DIVISION

Gemini Division - Rosario Dawson

The latest attempt at a web series comes from NBC and its new show, GEMINI DIVISION, which premieres on Monday, August 18, over at www.geminidivision.com, and stars Rosario Dawson, Justin Hartley (Smallville), and Kevin Alejandro (Ugly Betty).

Gemini Division is a female first-person confessional (Lonelygirl15-like) about biotech run wild. Rosario Dawson plays Anna Diaz, a New York City detective on a trip in Paris with her boyfriend (Justin Hartley), who seems to have something wrong with him.

Gemini Division - Justin Hartley and Rosario Dawson

I was able to take a sneak peek at the first two episodes (both about 5 minutes long) and I have yet to be impressed by it. I guess I am not an easy audience to begin with since the only internet show that actually followed was Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible Sing-Along Blog (which I must say was as good (if not better) than shows that are on TV). But then again, the reason why I never follow online stuff that much is because the quality is just never that good. And Gemini Division just proves my point once more. If NBC decides to make a web series and expects to make money on it, then in addition to getting a good cast, they need to put money behind the show. Gemini Division looks the way you would expect a web show to look like: cheap. The visual effects are just not that great, and when you decide to do a story that relies heavily on them, you cannot afford to be cheap. It takes the audience out of the story.

I just don’t understand how a big studio like NBC, with resources, can be outshined by someone like Joss Whedon, who definitely put everything he had into Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. It just feels like to me that NBC decided to do a web series but didn’t really want to invest to much into it. They most likely wanted a quick and dirty way to make money. Unfortunately, I’m going to need a lot more than that to sit in front of my computer and watch a show online. And now that I have seen what can be achieved, there is no excuse that web series shouldn’t be as good as shows we see on TV.

Gemini Division - Kevin Alejandro

But since I do want to end on a positive note, I will say that I am enjoying the fact that Rosario Dawson, Justin Hartley, and Kevin Alejandro (whom I still miss in Ugly Betty) are part of the cast. That’s at least one reason to tune in.

As for the story, I have to admit that I am a little confused about what the show is about. Maybe watching only 10 minutes of it was not enough to understand much, but after watching the videos below, it looks like a lot more is going to happen in future episodes. I will have to remind myself to watch the rest of it so I can find out what happens next.
