Review: “24” Season One Special Edition DVD

24 Season One Special Edition DVD

FOX has released an all new edition of the first season of 24, and since I was able to take a look at it, I wanted to share some of my thoughts.

First of all, the box is pretty fancy, if that something that appeals to you. It features a mini clock, which starts at Midnight when you click on the button inside the case. Inside the case you get a booklet that includes all seven DVDs.

Six of the seven DVDs contain the complete first season of 24, and how fun is it to watch it all over again. I didn’t really remember what happened, so it was exciting. Actually, the first time I saw 24, I had rented the first season and, well let’s just say that I didn’t sleep much the days following that rental. What a trip! So now imagine reliving it all over again. Sounds nice, right?!

Finally, the extra features is probably the most important part of this special edition.

Here is a list of all the extra features you can expect (** designates all-new DVD elements):

  • Season One Introduction by Kiefer Sutherland
  • All-new documentary The Genesis of 24**
  • Five extended episodes**
  • 25 extended / deleted scenes**
  • Never-before-seen alternate season finale ending #2**
  • Commentary on the series premiere episode (12:00AM-1:00AM) by director Stephen Hopkins and Director of Photography Peter Levy**
  • Commentary on the series finale episode (11:00PM-12:00AM) by director Stephen Hopkins and actress Leslie Hope**
  • The Rookie online short films (sponsored by Degree)**
  • Alternate season finale ending (with optional commentary by executive producer Joel Surnow)

I will admit that I haven’t check out all of them, but I did take a look at the alternate ending (love these) and without spoiling it, I will say that I think they went with the right ending, but it was fun to see the different direction they were thinking of going. You can actually check out the alternate ending below and decide for yourself.

I also took a look at the documentary, “The Genesis of 24,” and if you are a fan of the show, you might be interested in checking it out. It sort of talks about how 24 came to be.

As for the deleted scenes, they can be short and usually don’t really add much to the show (which is why they were deleted in the first place), but again if you are a fan of the show, this might be something you want to check out.

And in case you haven’t jumped on the 24 train yet, here is a quick synopsis to convince you.

Synopsis: The clock is ticking…Midnight. Jack Bauer, head of the CIA’s Los Angeles Counter Terrorist Unit, is suddenly thrust into a chaotic and exhausting 24-hour marathon of death, deception and terror as he struggles to prevent the assassination of a presidential candidate, find the traitor within his own organization, and save his kidnapped wife and daughter.

Overall, this is a great buy if you love the show and are a fan of extra features, because that’s pretty much what you are getting. I personally just enjoyed watching season one of 24 all over again.
