“Dark Matter” (Season 3): Never Underestimate Five

Dark Matter

As we have seen over and over again in the Syfy drama Dark Matter, Five (series regular Jodelle Ferland) is a mighty force on which to be reckoned. She may be the youngest member of the Raza crew, but thanks to her intellect and ingenuity she has repeatedly saved their lives.

That was very apparent in this past Friday’s all-new episode entitled “Hot Chocolate” that found Five narrowly escaping a hijacked Android, by using those two seemingly innocuous words to temporarily reboot the Android in order to get the upper-hand in the attempted take-over of the Raza by the transit clone of Rio Ishida.

If you aren’t a regular viewer of ‘Dark Matter’ [shame on you!], the above paragraph may sound crazy, but the show is about a team of former ruthless outlaws (except for Five) who travel the universe in a space ship – anything is possible.

In my last write-up about the show, I questioned whether Sarah (the deceased girlfriend of Three whose consciousness is now an interlocking part of the Raza’s computer) was good or bad. I think my doubts were laid to rest when Sarah helped Five in combating Rio and his minion of clone soldiers, who vainly attempted to retrieve the blink drive.

What’s the blink drive? It is basically a technology that allows instant travel over any distance. In more specific terms it is superior to faster than light travel, but ever since the Raza team appropriated the blink drive it has caused nothing but trouble.

However, if they were to allow the blink drive to fall into the hands of someone like Rio, who – since regaining his memories – has become the “rightful” ruler of his home planet Zairon and in the process has alienated his former comrades on the Raza not to mention earning the ire of the viewers [he really become a pain in the ass, don’t you think?!] it would be VERY bad.

Again, enter Five, who was able to stop Rio [with a very helpful assist by Sarah] from getting the blink drive by confiscating it and then helping to get the rest of the team out of lockdown. But given what was shown for next week’s episode, I have a feeling that keeping that blink drive and trying to “fix” it is going to come back to bite them in the ass, what do you think?

What are your thoughts on Five? Yes, she is a techno-whiz; she can handle herself in high pressure situation and she’s even proven that she can handle any weapon on that ship. And sure, she has a rather unusual style of dress [some of those combinations don’t even belong in the same room let alone on the same person, but she pulls them off] and her hair is always an awesome color of green, but she has the smarts to be an invaluable member of the Raza. She is someone who should never be underestimated. Please share your thoughts about Five and ‘Dark Matter’ in our comments section below.

The next new episode of the third season of ‘Dark Matter’ will air on Syfy on Friday, July 28 at 9/8c.
