COMIC CON 2017: Shadowhunters Invades the Con

Shadowhunters

One of the first panels I attended as Comic Con 2017 got underway was for the Freeform fantasy series Shadowhunters, which is based on the book series The Mortal Instruments by author Cassandra Clare.

As the cast and creative minds behind this show were introduced to the packed audience in the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel you could feel the electricity and excitement of the fans; and the panelists did not let them down.

Entering the ballroom and taking the stage were cast members Katherine McNamara, Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rosende, Emeraude Toubia, Matthew Daddario, Harry Shum, Jr., and Isaiah Mustafa as well as executive producers Todd Slavkin, Darren Swimmer and Matt Hastings.

Shadowhunters returned for the remainder of its second season at the beginning of June and has only a few more episodes to go before its season finale. In honor of that impending finale, a special sizzle reel was screened of what is to come for all the characters in that universe. Let me just say that there was a lot of action happening in the sizzle reel and plenty of tears not only by the characters, but by many of the fans. Needless to say, it’s going to be an incredible experience as these final episodes roll out. In fact, one of the cast members said, “There’s not much happy coming.”

Take that as you will, fans.

During the course of the panel – which included a first look at Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland as [SPOILER ALERT!] the adult version of the Seelie Queen, who approaches Simon in New York on that small bridge over the “pond” (if you will) that leads to the Seelie Court – were the following tidbits:

• Katherine shared, when asked about Clary and Jace’s relationship, “Clary has the best of intentions, but doesn’t always make the best decisions.” She further shared that with the recent break up with Simon, Clary has to “figure out what she (really) feels [about Simon and Jace] and (is going to) focus on her work.” That statement got some laughs from the audience and some comical needling from her co-star Dominic;

• Isaiah was asked about Luke’s new partner Ollie (recurring guest star Alexandra Ordolis), joking that “she is a pain in the ass” and when asked what he would like to see happen in Season 3 for Luke, he hoped he “would find love” again;

• According to executive producer Matt Hastings, Simon is “like Neo (for The Matrix franchise) “he’s a daylighter but he’s a humble guy who (just wants) to be with Clary.” He further shared that Simon “is a pure guy in many ways…he’s a celebrity vampire.”;

• Executive producers Darren and Todd shared that actress Alisha Wainwright – who plays werewolf Maia – has been made a series regular for season three and one other tease they were willing to share was that Lilith is coming next season; and,

• The cast got prepared for their roles by reading the books in the franchise. Alberto even listened to the music he thought Simon would like and Dominic shared that he writes in a journal as if he is Jace; in fact, he has done the same thing with all the other roles he has portrayed.

The next new episode of ‘Shadowhunters’ will air on Freeform tonight, July 24 at 8/7c.
