‘Supergirl’ (Season 2): Can See Have It All?

Supergirl S2 Finale

It is, once again, that time of the TV season where all of the network shows are airing their final episodes, and last night The CW’s comic-book-based series Supergirl aired its season finale.

In a year that has seemingly been difficult for a lot of fans to watch – if you read just some of the nearly hostile comments at any site for which a review of the previous week’s episode is concerned – fans aren’t happy with the direction the show has taken. There are a lot of Mon-El haters out there! Honestly, I was quite alarmed by the vehemence of some fans who absolutely loath Mon-El.

I’m not one of them. I’ve never had a problem with his character – sure, I was bothered by his cockiness in the beginning – but I saw over the course of the season that he was trying to be a better person because of Kara/Supergirl.

And just as it seemed that Kara was finally going to have it all, it was snatched away from her in order to save Earth; something even her cousin Superman admitted he would be hard-pressed to do if it meant he had to give up the woman he loves.

So I’m going to safely guess that fans who can’t stand Mon-El were ecstatic over his being sucked into that wormhole, but given how Kara feels about him, how will that loss eventually affect her. Sure, she is Supergirl, she is tough, powerful and incredible strong, but she was a woman in love. She made a noble and necessary sacrifice in giving up the man she loved to save Earth from an alien invasion that would have decimated the planet. But she was also a woman clearly in love – and a woman hoping to have it all. Now that is gone for her and I have to wonder if that will change her when the show returns in the fall.

I’m sure that fans who couldn’t wait for Mon-El to disappear in some fashion – and a wormhole is one sure-fire way to eliminate him – this is a comic-book-based series and what goes into a wormhole can always come back. So, with that thought in mind, could it possible that in season three of the show that perhaps they find a way for Mon-El to return and allow Kara to have it all? It’s not really that far out of the realm of possibility when you talk about a show like this, right?

In other parts of the finale, there was a lot of love spread among the other couples in the show: M’gann returned to Earth to help J’onn while Alex asked Maggie to marry her. How those relationships will work out, well, we will have to wait for new episodes. In the meantime, I would like to hear if there are other fans out there who want to see Kara happy with Mon-El. If you don’t like Mon-El, what is it about him that you dislike so much?

Where do you see the show going next season? Will Kara be different because of losing the man she loved or will she be able to get over her broken heart? How will that affect her being Supergirl or will she push aside her emotions while in her super suit? Please share your thoughts in our comments section below.

‘Supergirl’ will be back for its third season on The CW this fall on Monday nights at 8/7c.
