My Summer 2017 TV Programs

2017 Summer Programs

For the past few weeks and over the course of the next few, many TV programs are wrapping their seasons with the season finale. While I am sad to see my favorites end until fall or later, or maybe end forever, there is solace in the fact summer programming is also about to start or has started.

Indeed, one of my favorite shows, Fargo, has already premiered its summer season – can I call late April summer? Maybe not meteorologically, since over the weekend I was wearing my winter coat when I went to the grocery store!

For the past couple of summers, the major networks have provided us with short run series which I have enjoyed such as Extant, Zoo, Braindead, and Under the Dome. Those programs are not returning, but there are a small number of others that are returning and a few new shows from the major networks. Of course, the cable networks use a different programming model, running shorter series with seasons starting and ending throughout the year, and they are in full force this summer!

This summer I have ten returning shows that I am excitedly anticipating. Some are in their final seasons, though, which is sad.

The Strain, FX; premiere date and time unknown

Strain 1

Returning on an as yet unknown date and time for its fourth and final season, The Strain is a vampire story which took a different direction with the cause, attributing the vampire condition to a viral worm infection. Sometimes frustrated due to bonehead moves by the characters, I am nonetheless looking forward to the upcoming season and hope for a good series finale!

Turn: Washington’s Spies, AMC, June 17, 2017, 9 pm EDT

Turn: Washington's Spies

Also premiering its fourth and final season, this historical fiction has had a lot of unexpected twists and never fails to entertain. Mixing the familiar names with the less familiar, i.e., George Washington and Abraham Woodhull, Turn: Washington’s Spies makes me want to read more about the real history. And, I do love a good period piece!

12 Monkeys, Syfy; May 19, 2017, 8 pm EDT

12 Monkeys

Loosely based on the movie of the same name, 12 Monkeys never fails to surprise and entertain me! Returning for season three, this tale of a viral apocalypse, the aftermath, and the use of time travel to attempt to prevent it, will sometimes make your brain hurt, but in a good way, I promise!

And, for season three, Syfy network is trying out a binge schedule where the entire third season of ten episodes will air over one weekend! So, on May 19 from 8 pm – 12 am EDT, you can watch Episodes 1-4, on May 20 from 8 pm – 11 pm EDT you can watch episodes 5-7, and on May 21 from 8 pm – 11 pm EDT you can watch episodes 8-10. They’ll also be available online the day after they air.

Fear the Walking Dead, AMC; June 4, 2017, 9 pm EDT

Fear the Walking Dead

Returning for a third season, this spin-off from The Walking Dead has had its critics, but I have found it to be a program worth watching. Set on the West coast of the US, it has at least finally put to rest the idea that a boat would be a safe place in a zombie apocalypse, or any apocalypse, for that matter. The answer is no, since it is not just Walkers you have to be afraid of!

Stitchers, Freeform; June 5, 2017, 9 pm EDT

Stitchers

Stitchers is the story of a futuristic bit of technology where a specific person can be “stitched in” to the memories of a recently dead person. The memories accessed do not always make sense, so it is up to the team to figure out what they mean and hopefully solve either a murder or some other pressing case.

Dark Matter, Syfy; June 9, 2017, 8 pm EDT with two-hour premiere, then 9 pm EDT starting on June 16, 2017

Dark Matter Season 2

One of my favorites, Dark Matter is coming back for its third season. If you like space ships, mysteries, intrigue, and mayhem in a space and other worldly setting, this is the program for you!

Preacher, AMC; June 19, 2017, 9 pm EDT

preacher cast

Let me say up front that Preacher is one weird show! Based on the comic book, but of courses with variations, this show manages to keep you off balance while still drawing you in to find out more about these characters and their situation!

The Night Shift, NBC; June 22, 2017, 9 pm EDT

The Night Shift cast

The Night Shift is a medical show returning for season four, but besides being set in a San Antonio hospital, it also has three of the surgeons with a connection to the US Military through past service. Consequently, there are several instances where cases relate to returning veterans, making this show a little different than your standard medical show.

Killjoys, Syfy; June 30, 2017, 8 pm EDT

cast of Killjoys

Another of my favorites, Killjoys is returning for season three. Similar to what I said for Dark Matter, if you like space and programs set there, then you should enjoy watching this story of a team of space bounty hunters and all the mayhem that results as they also get involved in the fight against the corruption of the people in power.

Game of Thrones, HBO; July 16, 2017; 9 pm EDT

Game of Thrones

I doubt that many people are unaware of this program, but if not, then you should be watching if you have a strong stomach, since it can be extremely violent. Returning for season seven, which is the next to the last one, the question is who will ultimately end up in control of the Iron Throne?

I also have six new shows that have made my radar and I am hoping will become new favorites.

Saturday Night Live Weekend Update, NBC; August 10, 2017, 9 pm EDT

Jost and Che - Saturday Light Live

I love Saturday Night Live – and have since it first aired in the 1970s! Weekend Update is my favorite part of the show, so a program of just that to get me through the summer hiatus is very welcome indeed!

Midnight, Texas, NBC; July 24, 2017, 10 pm EDT

Midnight,Texas - Season 1

Midnight, Texas is a haven for supernatural creatures. When a psychic who can communicate with the dead moves there, well, let’s just say he gets involved in trying to stop a hellish invasion and win the war against evil.

Somewhere Between, ABC; July 24, 2017, 10 pm EDT

Paula Patton - Somewhere Between

The description of this drama in some ways reminds me of the current season of The Flash. The main character knows her daughter will be murdered, and also knows when and how. However, despite her best efforts, she seems to be unable to prevent it.

Will, TNT; July 10, 2017, 9 pm EDT

Laurie Davidson - Will

Described as a contemporary version of Shakespeare’s life, specifically his young adult life, I am sure this program will have lots of drama and maybe not so much in the way of historical accuracy. The trailers do lead me to believe it will be lusty, however!

Still Star Crossed, ABC; May 29, 2017, 10 pm EDT

STILL STAR-CROSSED ABC

And, to reinforce the Shakespeare revival, Still Star Crossed is based on the book of the same name and looks at the possible events after the death of Romeo and Juliet, as the feuding families struggle for survival. Will an arranged marriage be stopped? Tune in to find out!

Downward Dog, ABC; sneak preview, May 17, 2017, 9:30 pm EDT, regular premiere May 23, 2017, 8 pm EDT

Downward Dog ABC

This program first made my radar when I read about in the summer of 2016. It is finally going to air a year later – better late than never! Downward Dog stars Allison Tolman who I just loved when she starred in the first season of Fargo. Downward Dog is based on the web-series of the same name. Of course, telling the story from the point of view of an animal is nothing new, but it is still a fun way to give an outside perspective on life. Who does not love a philosophical dog?

What programs are you looking forward to this summer? Please let me know in the comments section below. I love hearing what others are watching, and have found some favorite shows that way!

  • Mark Trammell

Just so you know, Zoo is actually coming back, I’m happy to say. I think it premieres in late June, if I’m not mistaken.

    • Mark Trammell

I’m very sad BrainDead is not, though. We could use a show like that right about now. Yay to Mary Elizabeth Winstead cropping up on Fargo, though!

      • ptjackson

Seriously. Maybe it was too topical. But, yes, Seeing Mary Elizabeth on Fargo is such a treat!

    • ptjackson

OMG, really?? Ok, just looked it up – season 3 premieres June 29, at 10 pm EDT!! YAY!! Thanks for pointing that out!
