Starz Teaches Fans How To Speak ‘Outlander’

Before we can watch Outlander properly, we must first learn to speak some Gaelic. Should be easier than Klingon or Dothraki, right? At least it’s a real thing. Even if it was the hardest language to master in all the land, the lessons go down easy thanks to Outlander star Sam Heughan’s help. Heughan plays the fierce Jamie Fraser in the sci-fi/historical romance and in the first “instructional” video he teaches us to properly pronounce a very important Outlander word: Sassenach.

A Sassenach means an English person or an “Outlander.” It’s often used as a derogatory term, however as you can tell from the gorgeous way the word rolls off Heughan’s tongue, within the series it becomes a term of endearment Jamie uses to refer to the time-traveling Claire. Watch the video below.

Have you mastered the pronunciation or did you find Heughan too distracting?

Outlander premieres on Starz in 2014.
