Netflix must really like Orange is the New Black.
The streaming service has greenlit the women’s prison comedy from Weeds‘ creator Jenji Kohan for a second season ahead of season one’s July 11th debut. The series is based on a best-selling memoir by Piper Kerman, and stars Taylor Schilling as a successful New York socialite whose past relationship with her drug runner ex-girlfriend (Laura Prepon) lands her in prison.
“Jenji and her team have produced a phenomenal series and we’re eager to get a second season to our viewers,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix in a statement. While Kohan commented, “I am thrilled that Netflix has extended my sentence.”
The 13-episode first season of Orange is the New Black is set to premiere exclusively on Netflix (in all territories where the service is available) on Thursday, July 11th at 12:01 AM PDT. Production on season two begins this summer for a 2014 debut.
