The new Starz period piece drama Da Vinci’s Demons just aired its debut episode this past weekend and already the network is giving the show a second season order. The reason behind this speedy renewal is the fact the show had a record-setting premiere on April 12, earning more than 2.14 million viewers, making it the highest-rated premiere weekend ever for a Starz original series.
‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ focuses on 25-year-old Leonardo Da Vinci (as portrayed by Tom Riley), an artist, inventor, swordsman, lover, dreamer and idealist. As a free thinker, with intellect and talents that are almost superhuman, he struggles to live within the confines of his own reality and time. He begins to not only see the future, but invent it. The cast also includes Laura Haddock (‘Captain America: The First Avenger’) as celebrated beauty, Lucrezia Donati; Elliot Cowan (‘Lost in Austen’) as shrewd de factor ruler of Florence, Lorenzo Medici; Lara Pulver (‘Sherlock’), as Medici’s wife Clarice Orsini and Blake Ritson (‘Upstairs Downstairs’) as ruthless and unwavering Count Girolamo Riario, nephew of Pope Sixtus IV.
Production on season two of the series is expected to begin in Wales in May 2013, with an on-air return expected on Starz in 2014.
In the meantime, the second episode of the debut season of ‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ will air this Friday, April 19 at 9/8c on Starz.
