In the Psych season 7 premiere, called “Santa Barbaratown 2, Lethal Weapon 5,” Shawn is on the hunt to get the man who shot his father and manages to find a few more bad guys, at least one good guy, and of course a lot of snacks, along the way.
I just looked at the calendar and I almost can’t believe it’s been nearly a year since this show has been on the air. My life was completely different the last time this show aired and not all of the changes have necessarily been good ones so, for me, seeing Psych again was like getting a visit from an old friend. When the theme song came on I became extremely giddy and yes, of course I sang and danced along.
An Emotional Roller Coaster
My giddiness was short-lived though, as this premiere jumps in right where the finale left off. That means that we get to see Henry’s shooting again, this time through another person’s eyes. From there, it’s an emotional roller coaster as Henry is rushed to the hospital. We spend most of that time with Shawn and it was a bit rough to watch him as it seemed like he really didn’t know what to do with himself. Should he be the funny wacky guy or should he be the serious guy who is ready to start giving his father a goodbye speech.
Bromance to the Rescue
While Henry is fighting in the hospital, Shawn decides to go after the one responsible for putting him there and that’s when we finally get to see more of the Shawn (and the Psych) that we know and love. This is when Gus comes in, not only to help his friend in his time of need, but to put the bromance back on track and the jokes back where they belong. Ridiculous disguises – check, hilarious Gus nicknames – check, nicknames for Gus – check, rides in the Blueberry – check, snacks, snacks and more snacks – check, check and check. It’s these moments that lets us know it’s okay to laugh, even though underneath all the action there is still a very serious worry about Henry’s injury.
Danger, Shawn Spencer, Danger!
Despite the copious amounts of humor that they did manage to put into this episode, I’d still have to say that the overall theme is danger. It starts out with Henry, but that’s really only the beginning. Once Shawn decides that he’s going to go after the person who shots his father, there isn’t anything that will stop him – not even the threat of bodily harm. Gus gamely goes along with his best bud, but even he isn’t immune to the risky situations that they soon find themselves. In fact, things become so perilous at one point that even sitting down turns into a life-threatening situation. You know things are getting crazy when Shawn is not only wearing body armor, but aiming guns at people. And if you think he’s doing all of those things with a smile on his face the whole time, you would be sorely mistaken.
My favorite (non-spoilery) quotes..
“This guy may be a cop killer, but he knows how to put together a rumpus room.”
“Carlton, stop playing with the evidence.”
“Screw you, Angry Birds!”
“Do not go boneless, Shawn.”
“In my defense, Chief, I am that good and there’s an anatomically correct trophy over my toilet that proves that fact.”
“Oh my gosh, you look like the bird lady from Mary Poppins.”
“I wonder if their buns are glazed.”
“What is the point of his face?”
“Hello, ass face.”
“I’ll be damned, this is the second Mexican stand-off I’ve been a part of today.”
