During the pilot season of ABC’s Once Upon a Time, actor Sebastian Stan was brought in to play the legendary Mad Hatter opposite lead actresses Jennifer Morrison and Ginnifer Goodwin in a twisty story about a man named Jefferson, a seemingly harmless recluse living in Storybrooke, who Emma nearly mows down with her VW bug. Stan returned for two more episodes in the first season and has appeared in three episodes so far in the show’s second season.
Now, according to Deadline, it looks like the powers that be at ABC are thinking about creating a spin-off series that will focus on the Mad Hatter himself. The only trouble is that Stan just might not be playing the role because he is finishing a run in the Broadway play ‘Picnic’ and then will be training for his role in the upcoming ‘Captain America’ sequel.
Gasp!, right?! The Mad Hatter without Sebastian Stan in the elaborate cravat and oversized hat? Say it ain’t so…
It seems that ABC might film a short presentation with the character or perhaps given the project a 13-episode commitment; but there is no official word just yet, as it’s too early in the planning changes to say just what will pan out. The report says that the Mad Hatter could return to ‘Once Upon a Time’ for another guest appearance later this season and the storyline “pops”, that episode could serve as a back-door pilot for the proposed project.
The fact still remains, though, that if this proposed project happens, Stan will more than likely not be playing the part; and for any fan of the popular fairytale drama, that could be disappointing to say the least.
In the meantime, the next new episode of ‘Once upon a Time’ will air this coming Sunday, March 3 at 8/7c on ABC.
