History Channel has released an intriguingly detailed piece of key art for their upcoming nine-part epic scripted series Vikings that highlights the duality of Viking culture.
Featuring the adventurous Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel), the poster puts the series’ multifaceted logo front and center. The left side of the V, with its intricate detailing, represents the softer side of Viking culture– family, brotherhood, technological advances, growth and life –while the blood-spattered right side recalls the more familiar violent imagery traditionally associated with Vikings.
In addition to the poster, History Channel has also offered up four new promo videos introducing us to the complex and mysterious world the Vikings inhabit, as well as to key characters Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), a shield maiden who is fiercely protective of her family, and Earl (Gabriel Byrne), the ruler of the clan. Interestingly, all four videos feature AWOLNATION’s “Sail,” an anachronistic choice, for sure, but one that links up with the series theme of exploration quite nicely.

Vikings premieres Sunday, March 3rd at 10PM (ET) on History Channel.
