‘Castle’ Season 5: Love Is In the Air and a Mystery Man Makes an Appearance

As fans of the ABC drama Castle know all too well, there is a mystery man in the life of author Rick Castle (series regular Nathan Fillion) in the form of his often-talked about but never seen father. Over the course of the series’ run, Rick’s daddy has been referenced countless times; but viewers will finally get to see the man in the flesh and maybe we will even get to finally learn the man’s name, seeing how Rick’s mother, Martha Rodgers (series regular Susan Sullivan) has never really come clean on his identity.

And, as viewers will recall, actress Jennifer Beals appeared in last year’s two-part February sweeps episodes as CIA agent Sophie Turner – the object of Castle’s affection many years prior, who was also the model for a pivotal female character in his Derek Storm series of novels – made Castle question what little he knows about his father, making it seem that daddy dearest had some kind of connection with the spy world.

When this season’s two-part February sweeps episodes roll around, Castle just might start to get answers as his father will show up in the big city, being played by legendary actor James Brolin (aka Mr. Barbra Streisand), who appeared in the 1970’s medical drama ‘Marcus Welby, M.D.’ as well as the popular 1980’s soap opera ‘Hotel’. The two-parter will air on February 18 and February 25 with Rick’s dad showing up in the latter of the two.

Much like the mystery that surrounds his father, very few details have been released about Rick’s dad except that he will figure into the second half of the big February sweeps episode that will find Castle and Beckett (series regular Stana Katic) teaming with even-keeled FBI Agent Harris, to be played by actor Dylan Walsh (‘Nip/Tuck’ and ‘Unforgettable’) to investigate a murder that exposes a plot to kidnap the daughter of a wealthy Middle Eastern businessman. And, in true February sweeps style, it would appear that Castle’s involvement in this particular case will put his life in danger.

February, of course, will also feature a Valentine’s Day episode that will not only find Detective Kevin Ryan (series regular Seamus Dever) thinking about making a baby with his wife Jenny while newly-out-in-the-open couple Beckett and Castle will be celebrating their first holiday together, contemplating what gifts to exchange while investigating a Real Housewives-type reality show that will feature Fillion’s former Firefly co-star Gina Torres (who now stars in the USA Network series ‘Suits’).

Also this season the popular series will celebrate its 100th episode, but plans are still in the initial stages. Series creator Andrew Marlowe has shared that he is “noodling” on the storyline of the milestone episode, but that “you always want (the 100th episode) to be compelling. Where (this episode falls (for this current season) – since it’s close to the season finale but not the season finale – (makes it necessary that) we…be cautious that we don’t steal thunder from how we’re intending to end the season”. How will he make that work? Marlowe says, “we need to…deliver something interesting, compelling and a memorable hour of TV. So, yeah, the pressure is on”!

Fans should also be prepared for the return of Beckett’s therapist (guest star Michael Dorn), who will be back during February sweeps because of a run-in that she has with Senator Bracken (guest star Jack Coleman). It would seem that she is investigating a murder that leads to his doorstep, possibly giving Kate the opportunity to finally get the man who was responsible for her mother’s murder.

Needless to say, there is a lot coming up in February on ‘Castle’ for which fans should be prepared. The series will be back on ABC with its next new episode on Monday, February 4 at 10/9c.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I’m freaking out! You have no idea!!!! Can’t wait!

Dear Rueben – Castle’s father has hardly been mentioned “countless” times. Perhaps 4 times in 90 episodes. Beckett and Castle already celebrated Labor Day in the Hamptons and Christmas on screen (and by the calendar, every other holiday in between) so Valentine’s (which is not even a holiday) would not be “their first holiday together”. If you are going to embellish things at least get things right

    Thanks, good article.
