We are only two episodes into the third season of the ABC Family teen-based soap opera Pretty Little Liars [the third episode will air tomorrow night] and already our heads are spinning, right?
First of all, Mona (Janel Parrish) is out of the sanitarium, supposedly getting a “clean” bill of health from the doctors there [but what do those shrinks know considering Mona was routinely escaping the locked doors of that place, right?] and returning to school much to the chagrin of not only our four heroines – Aria (Lucy Hale), Spencer (Troian Bellisario), Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Emily (Shay Mitchell) – but also everyone else at the school not to mention all the residents of Rosewood. It’s not like everyone in the town doesn’t know what Mona attempted to do to Spencer and her three closest friends.
Then there is the (for now) hidden fact that Spencer’s boyfriend Toby (Keegan Allen) [who I personally can’t even bare to look at anymore – sigh!] is part of the “A” team and working against the girls. Not to mention the fact that he tried to mow down poor Lucas (Brendan Robinson) in the season premiere. What is up with that? I thought the four girls were the primary objective. What does Toby (or more specifically Mona and/or “A”) have against Lucas and when will that truth be fully revealed?
And, then worst of all, there are deep suspicious that Aria’s daddy-dearest Byron (Chad Lowe) could have possibly had something to do with the untimely and mysterious death of Allison (Sasha Pieterse). It also doesn’t help that the way Bryon has been acting around Aria, the four girls in general actually and his new (or returned) lady love Meredith (Amanda Schull) isn’t helping matters. Just what involvement did he have in Allison’s disappearance and death? Time will tell, that’s for sure.
In the meantime, what can we expect to happen next for the girls of Rosewood? Well, for Aria she will have a big hurdle to face with boyfriend Ezra (Ian Harding). She knows that he has a son with his high school girlfriend (a child he thought was ‘taken care’ of by the mandate of his controlling mother); but when the truth comes out (and you know that will happen soon enough), how will Ezra react to Aria knowing the truth?
Then for Hanna, she has the most to deal with in terms of Mona returning to school because they were the best of friends; and Hanna tried to give Mona the benefit of the doubt throughout her time in the sanitarium. But, as evidenced in last week’s episode, Hanna doesn’t want anything more to do with Mona; and given that girl’s proclivity for the crazy, that could spell even bigger trouble for Hanna.
Emily, on the other hand, will reportedly “stumble upon some Allison revelations” that will give her more “of an active role in pursuing the mystery of what happened to her that summer”. According to executive producer Oliver Goldstick, Emily “stumbles upon something that opens up a whole new world about Allison, a portal to the girl’s psychology and what she was doing that summer”. [Dun, dun, dun]
Lastly, there is Spencer who (as viewers know, but she doesn’t – YET!) is that Toby is not on her side and is in fact an integral part of the “A” team. What this devastating revelation will do to the strong-willed girl is anyone’s guess; but I can tell you this much, it is not going to be good.
On a lighter note, if that can be found in this show, Spencer’s former ‘boyfriend’ Wren (Julian Morris) will be back; and it seems he turns up just at the right now once Spencer learns the truth about Toby (convenient, no?!). Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) seems to be by Hanna’s side and given not only her daddy issues and that whole Mona thing, Hanna is gonna need a strong supporter on her side. And, the relationship between Emily and Paige (Lindsey Shaw) seems to be going strong despite Paige having her own insecurities given all that has happened to her since she and Emily became a couple.
Make sure to tune into the next new episode of ‘Pretty Little Liars’ on ABC Family tonight (January 22) at 8/7c to see what happens next.
