Earlier this month we reported here that the CW was developing a spin-off to the network’s popular series ‘The Vampire Diaries’ that would be called The Originals that would star Joseph Morgan, who plays original vampire Klaus on the fan favorite drama.
Now word has come down from Deadline that actor Daniel Gillies, who plays Elijah, one of the other original vampires on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ (and brother to Klaus), will also be joining the cast of the spin-off series that will also include actress Phoebe Tonkin, who plays the recurring role of Hayley, the werewolf “pal” of Tyler (Michael Trevino).
The backdoor pilot for ‘The Originals’ will actually air as the April 25 episode of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and will focus on the Original family of vampires, as “Klaus returns to the supernatural melting pot that is the French Quarter of New Orleans – a town he helped build centuries ago – and is reunited with his diabolical former protégé Marcel. Elijah, who is intent on helping his self-destructive brother find redemption, must side with Marcel’s enemies in order to keep Klaus in line”. Julie Plec, who is co-creator and executive producer of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ will write this episode and will serve as the showrunner for the spin-off along with Leslie Morgenstein and Gino Girolamo serving as executive producers.
Fans of the Canadian series ‘Saving Hope’ – for which Gillies is the male lead – need not worry, though, as he will continue in his lead role in the medical drama as well as his role in ‘The Originals’ should the latter be picked up by The CW for the 2013-2014 TV season.
