History Channel’s ‘Vikings’ Teaser Boasts “A Storm Is Coming”

Hot off the success of the Hatfields and McCoys, the History Channel is hoping for a repeat performance from their upcoming nine-part epic Vikings. The series comes from Michael Hirst (whose credits include an impressive list of historical films and series, including Elizabeth and The Tudors), and stars Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment), Travis Fimmel (The Beast), Gustaf Skarsgard (The Way Back), Jessalyn Gilsig (Glee) and Katheryn Winnick (Bones).

Vikings has plenty of talent behind it, and the premise, which focuses on exploration and family dynamics, sounds like it has the potential to be an entertaining historical epic. However, it’s hard to tell what the series will actually look like from the first teaser, which is short on plot details, but brimming with bloodlust. It does promise “A Storm is Coming” though. Could that be a message aimed at HBO? From the focus on family drama set against the backdrop of political upheaval in the Dark Ages, to the tagline, which sounds suspiciously like “Winter is Coming,” Vikings appears to be History’s answer to Game of Thrones–minus the dragons, of course.

Watch the teaser for yourself below. Are you intrigued? Or do you like a healthy dollop of fantasy mixed into your historical epics?

Vikings premieres Sunday, March 3rd at 10PM on History.
