Supernatural Chat: 5 Reasons I (Might) Love Benny

Supernatural Season 8 Episode 5 Blood Brother

Hey there, Supernatural fans! How about season 8 season so far, eh? Talk about a roller coaster ride and we’re not even halfway through it yet.

In this edition of Supernatural Chat, I decided to talk about the newest character in the cast – Benny. I’ve been holding off on giving any real opinions about Benny until I knew more about his story, but try as I might, I can’t seem to help the fact that I’m not only forming those opinions, but that most of them so far are positive.

I didn’t expect to like Benny. I really didn’t. From the moment I heard that we were going to be seeing Sam and Dean after Dean spent a year in Purgatory, and that he’d met a new friend there – not just any friend but a vampire at that – I wasn’t sure what to think. Everyone probably knows by now how much I love Dean and Cas’ friendship, as well as of course the bond of the brothers, so I guess I wondered what we needed with another character. I’m not saying my thoughts were right, just that that’s what they were.

But after a few episodes with Dean’s vampire buddy, I think it’s possible that I might, just might, be starting to love Benny. Why “might”? Because seeing as how he’s a monster and how badly relationships like that have gone wrong for the boys in the past, I’m going try and hold my feelings in check until I know a lot more about him.

He’s a badass

You gotta admit – even if you’re not a fan of Dean finding a new friend or of that friend being a vampire – that Benny certainly fits in with the Winchesters. He took on his old nest single-handedly and managed to survive long enough to call Dean for back-up. The guy had multiple broken bones, including two broken legs, and got himself to a place out of the sun. I’m a sucker for a tough guy (which explains why I love pretty much all the characters on this show), so yeah, that definitely won me over a bit.

He eats blood, not people

Finding out that Dean had befriended a vampire in Purgatory, and then brought that vamp back with him to good ol’planet earth, raised a few questions. Not the least of which was: is Benny going to go back to chomping on humans when he gets out and if so, how could Dean possibly be okay with that? I guess I figured that Dean would have made a deal with Benny that he would have to give up his live diet, but what I didn’t count on was the fact that Benny had already done that years before being killed and dropped into Purgatory. That bit of his story made it easier to believe he could live on a blood-bag-diet.

He’s capable of love

This is the one that got to me the most. Again, I had assumptions about Benny before the season aired and one of them was that the only reason he and Dean had paired up was due to a mutual need. It never occurred to me that there might be real affection between them, but now I’ve seen it and know that it’s true. I think that is only possible because of the fact that Benny had been in love before he went to Purgatory. He was already a changed man….er vampire before Dean met him, which makes a big difference.

He’s trustworthy (so far)

As much as I wanted to find any way I could to mistrust Benny and his actions, so far the guy hasn’t done a thing to make me suspicious of him. He doesn’t seem to have lied to Dean in Purgatory (that we’ve seen anyway) and even when he was being mean about Cas, he was always telling them the truth about their situation. Even Cas saw it. Benny told Dean he would help him find a way out of Purgatory, and apparently did seeing as how they are out. Benny also promised Dean that he wouldn’t eat live when he got back and he hasn’t done that either. The interesting thing is that Benny has probably been the most honest person (vampire, whatever) in Dean’s life for a while.

He’s still a mystery

Supernatural - We Need To Talk About Kevin

Yes, I have to admit that one of things that is really growing on me about Benny is the continued mystery. Sure we know a lot about him, but I bet there’s a lot more to know, too. The mystery factor that is still there is very intriguing and I find myself wanting to know more about him. That kind of curiosity always makes my affection for a character grow.

So what about you folks? What do you think of Benny on this season of Supernatural? Are you beginning to like him as I am or do you think that he’s going to turn out to be another terrible addition to the Dean’s (and Sam’s, by proxy) life?

I have to say I agree with you I am liking Benny.  I think it’s about time the boys think out their box of all monsters are evil and must be destroyed.  This is a fun and very cool twist and it is nice to see them especially Dean coming out of that blind hatred that he claimed to have for them.   I don’t on the other hand liked that he kept it from Sam and if I were Sam I would be so freaking pissed off at him too.  Plus I have to say that Sam has every right to hunt Benny but I really hope he doesn’t.

Well I agree with u partly. But Sam didnt help much when Dean told him about his hell experience. So Dean probably has some justification for wanting to keep certain things to himself. He knows Sam will not approve of Benny. Worse if Sam belittles Dean for using a vampire to get out of purgatory. This season Sam does not seem happy that Dean is back (I sincerely hope that changes).

I love Benny, or at least I’m vouching for him, and you know why, because with all the betrayal and abandonnement Dean had to face with Sam and Castiel, Benny is like a rush a fresh air. I want Dean to have a friend. Of course, things can still get screwed but hey, let’s hope.

I have nothing against Dean having both an angel AND a vampire as a friend  – – IF that vampire turns out to be a good guy (remember the demon Ruby also seemed ‘nice and helpful,’ before her true nature was revealed) and IF Benny wasn’t simply brought on so they could ultimately write out Cas.  I happen to love Cas.  I love Team Free Will, the term Dean used to describe Dean, Sam, and Cas. Plus, frankly, I’m tired of all the vampires littering TV shows and movies.  I’m just not a vampire ‘groupie.’  I don’t want SPN turned into another version of “Vampire Diaries” or “Twilight.”

Benny and Ruby are different because Ruby seemed nice and helpful, but she also let Sam drink her blood. Benny halped Dean in Purgatory and he didn-t nothing wrong. for now

I like Benny. He seems like a good addition to the show. I loved the scene between Dean, Cas & Benny in purgatory (Dean says u guys are killing me). There was a lot of chemistry between the 3 of them. Ty and Jensen really do seem to play well off each other. Their interactions seem intense and genuine. I really hope he doesnt let down Dean. All Dean (and Sam by proxy) needs is another betrayal. But am sure the show will find a way to eliminate him by the end of the season. Lets just hope its not Sam or Dean who has to hunt him down.

I think Benny is at partially here for us to think about Dean’s prior relationship to monsters.  He’s the one who has mostly had the “kill ALL the monsters” mantra.  He’s the one that gets pissed about Sam having secrets.  Now he’s the one with a monster buddy he kept secret.  I not only like Benny for all the reasons stated in the article, but also because we now get to explore a different side of Dean.  And I’m all about exploring Dean. ;)

I’m with you, I’m liking Benny.  He’s given me no reason not to like him and every reason to.  He’s interesting, heartfelt, sincere, tough, smart, funny, and he and Dean have a connection that I’m enjoying watching.  I’m glad Dean has him.  Sam has his own stuff going on, and that’s fine, and Dean needs someone he knows will listen and knows exactly what he’s talking about.  I know the relationship will shift in the future, but it’s working for me now!

  • Hermitme

I love Benny and I hope he becomes one of the team members. The chemistry between Dean and Benny, while not as sizzling as the one between Dean and Cas, is still strong and Benny is a great mystery to discover.  I hope he stays.

      Miles vary.

I’m enjoying Benny very much. I think he fits well into the Supernatural world, and I’m going to trust Dean’s instincts that Benny can be a worthy ally.
    Bring on more Team Purgatory!

  • MerrySard

I think there’s potential that trusting Benny could come back and (excuse the pun) bite Dean on the butt, but until that happens, he’s an interesting character who is gaining some good background that doesn’t feel cardboard.

I have adored Benny from the jump – or at least as soon as we met him. I wasn’t too thrilled with the thought of him when all these spoilers were first out there saying Dean had a vamp buddy, but after meeting him? Yep. Gotta love him and gotta love his relationship with Dean. I’m just scared that we are meant to see him the way Dean sees him right now and eventually he will let Dean – and us admirers – down big time. Man, I hope not!
